SUMMARY:Conversations in Colour Art Reception
DESCRIPTION:“Everyone needs a bit more colour in their life.” \nThat’s one of the many life philosophies of local visual artist\, photographer\, cajonier (pronounced “cah-hone-ee-ay” – a totally made-up word he invented to describe someone who makes wooden Peruvian hand drums)\, musician and Campbell River Mirror journalist Mike Davies\, whose first ever solo art show is coming up at the Tidemark Gallery this month. \nDavies is excited – although admittedly a bit nervous – for his first gallery show\, “but it’s also kind of about time\, really\,” he says with a laugh. \n“I’ve been making art for as long as I can remember\,” he says. “I actually began my university studies in the fine arts program way back when. I’ve just never had enough of my own to actually put on a show\, because I would always be either painting them for other people or making them and then giving them away because I just didn’t have room to keep them.” \nBut over the last year or so he really got to work in his studio\, and has now officially launched “Conversations in Colour\,” a project he envisioned as a way to inject more visual vibrance into people’s lives. \n“The world can be a pretty dreary place sometimes\,” he says. “There’s too much despair\, depression and negativity surrounding us\, and I just thought\, ‘the world needs more bright spots.’ So I started making some.” \nWhich makes the timing of his first show all the more appropriate. \n“This is the time of year when the days get shorter\, the sky gets gloomier and people just start getting kind of sluggish and low\,” he says. \nAs a long-time advocate for strengthening mental health within ourselves\, our community and our society in general\, Davies says\, he sees his current art project as another way to help with that – at least in some small way. \n“Depression\, in all its forms\, is seriously debilitating for people and is a major cause of – or at least significant contributing factor in – some of the serious social problems we see around us every day\, such as drug addiction\, homelessness and domestic abuse. So I guess you could say the fight against it is something I take pretty seriously\,” he says\, which is why he has also decided to donate 20 per cent of the proceeds from the sales of his work during the show to the Canadian Mental Health Association. \nAfter all\, he says\, he doesn’t make art to make money\, he paints to try and make the world a bit better place to be. \n“If I made art for the money in it\, I wouldn’t make art\,” he says. \nDavies’ show\, “A Conversation in Colour\,” is on now and runs throughout November. \nAn opening reception for the show will be held Tuesday Nov. 15 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. before the Campbell River Festival of Film screening of The Dressmaker. The reception is free and open to the public\, so stop by and show your support for local art and mental health.

DESCRIPTION:Two Measures of This Precious Coast\n Haig-Brown Memorial Lecture\n with Andrew Nikiforuk & Ian McAllister \nTwo impassioned voices for environmental conservation will be joining together for an evening at the Tidemark Theatre in honour of early environmental activist and Campbell Riverite Roderick Haig-Brown. This is the seventh in the Annual Haig-Brown Memorial Lecture series\, which has been a joint effort of the Campbell River Arts Council\, the Museum at Campbell River\, and the Haig-Brown Institute. This year’s event is called “Two Measures of this Precious Coast”. Andrew Nikiforuk will be presenting the lecture\, “Why Haig-Brown Matters More than Ever”\, and Ian McAllister of Pacific Wild will be opening with a talk called “The Ocean Never Sleeps”. \nFor more than three decades Andrew Nikiforuk has written about energy\, economics and the West for a variety of Canadian publications including the Walrus\, Maclean’s\, Canadian Business\, The Globe and Mail’s Report on Business\, Chatelaine\, Georgia Straight\, Equinox and Harrowsmith. Nikiforuk’s journalism has won seven National Magazine Awards since 1989 and top honours for investigative writing from the Association of Canadian Journalists. This former Haig-Brown Writer-in-Residence will offer insight into why Roderick Haig-Brown remains Canada’s most under-appreciated conservationist. On almost every issue including salmon protection\, dam building\, climate change and community resilience\, Haig-Brown forged a remarkable and inspiring moral vision for ordinary people. In this lively talk Nikiforuk will explain why Haig-Brown’s legacy matters more than ever. \nCanada may have the longest coast-line of any nation but it has set aside the least for marine protection. Famed photographer and conservationist Ian McAllister presents a visual tour on the state of fin whales\, herring and salmon in the Great Bear Rainforest. He asks\, “What would Haig-Brown do today?” McAllister is an award-winning photographer and author of six books\, and his images have appeared in publications around the world. He is a member of the International League of Conservation Photographers and a recipient of the North America Nature Photography Association’s Vision Award and the Rainforest Action Network’s Rainforest Hero award. He and his wife\, Karen\, were named by Time magazine amongst “Leaders of the 21st Century” for their efforts to protect British Columbia’s endangered rainforest.
