SUMMARY:CRFF - Maliglutit (Searchers)
DESCRIPTION:Inuk filmmaker Zacharias Kunuk (Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner) returns with this Arctic epic\, Maliglutit (Searchers)\, inspired by the classic John Ford western of the same name\, about a vengeful husband who sets off in pursuit of the violent men who kidnapped his wife and destroyed his home. \nFifteen years ago\, Inuk filmmaker Zacharias Kunuk won the prestigious Caméra d’or for Best First Feature at Cannes with Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner. His second feature\, the equally fine The Journals of Knud Rasmussen\, opened TIFF in 2006. Now\, 10 years later\, Kunuk has made another film along with collaborator Natar Ungalaaq\, a work that continues to examine the people and landscapes of his native North. \nInspired this time not by oral legends or journals but by John Ford’s 1956 western The Searchers\, Kunuk and Ungalaaq have hewed close to the basics of that plot while making a film very different in tone and feel. The Searchers is essentially a revenge film: in the original\, a white girl was kidnapped by members of the Comanche nation; in Kunuk’s version\, an Inuk woman is kidnapped by her own people. But it is the repercussions of these acts of violence that both films explore. Here\, a family is torn apart in the vast spaces of the Arctic\, when marauding men desperate for conquest break into an igloo with intent to kidnap. When the husband returns to find his home ransacked\, he vows revenge. \nAgainst a barren\, wintry landscape\, a band of maliglutit (“followers”) sets out to rescue the captives. It is an arduous journey across the tundra and\, along the way\, the theme changes from one of justifiable revenge to one of self-examination\, as the film questions whether these hunters\, ostensibly the heroes\, have begun to act like those who have violated their family. \nWith a tale as timeless as the landscape in which it is set\, Canada’s foremost Inuk filmmaker has provided us with another classic. \nRated 14A \nTickets: $12 (+ applicable taxes and fees)

SUMMARY:Super Hero Theatre Camp
DESCRIPTION:Super Hero Theatre Camp is a 5-day interactive theatre course during School District 72’s Spring Break for people ages 8 and up. This half-day camp is put on by the Tidemark Theatre Society and On the Mark Theatre. \nWhat to expect at the camp \nParticipants will have the opportunity to learn key acting techniques such as character development\, projection and memorization. Improvisational theatre skills will be used to create a short original production for family and friends to be held at the conclusion of the camp. Participants will also create an original masked character during our mask-making sessions. \nWhat is improv? \nImprovisation\, or improv\, is a form of live theatre in which the plot\, characters and dialogue of a game\, scene or story are made up in the moment. Often improvisers will take a suggestion from the audience\, or draw on some other source of inspiration to get started. \nWhat can improv help me with? \nAdvanced listening\nActive listening on and off the stage. Being in the moment and truly hearing what someone is saying. \nBuild off one another “yes\, and..”\nHow to make an idea build into something wonderful and unexpected. DESCRIPTION:The music of the late John Denver is like an old friend\, outlasting trends and standing the test of time.  Join acclaimed performer Jim Curry for this tribute to the music of one of the most beloved singer/songwriters ever to grace the stage.  Jim’s uncanny ability to mirror John’s voice combined with his clean-cut look takes you back to the time when “Take me Home Country Roads”\, “Rocky Mountain High”\, “Sunshine”\, “Calypso” and “Annie’s Song” topped the charts\, and his popular music had the heartfelt message of caring for the earth and caring for each other.  Jim believes that John Denver’s words still ring true in these difficult times of war and environmental crisis. \nTribute artist Jim Curry\, whose voice was heard in the CBS-TV movie Take Me Home: The John Denver Story\, has performed Denver’s music in sold out shows throughout the US and Canada as well as out to sea and has emerged as today’s top performer of Denver’s vast legacy of multi-platinum hits.  He’s not your usual “Vegas style” impersonator. SUMMARY:Harry Manx with the Emily Carr String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:“Mysticssippi” blues man Harry Manx has been called an “essential link” between the music of East and West\, creating musical short stories that wed the tradition of the Blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas. He has created a unique sound that is hard to forget and deliciously addictive to listen to. \nHarry forged his distinctive style by studying at the feet of the masters\, first as a sound man in the blues clubs of Toronto during his formative years and then under a rigorous tutelage with Vishwa Mohan Bhatt in India. Bhatt is the inventor of the 20-stringed Mohan Veena\, which has become Harry’s signature instrument. \nHarry played slide guitar for many years before meeting Bhatt in Rajasthan\,in fact he had been living in another part of India for many years already\, but he started at the beginning under Bhatt’s tutelage\, unlearning most of what he knew about playing a slide instrument. He learned Eastern scales and eventually ragas\, deceptively complex and regimented musical patterns that form the basis of Indian composition. Learning the voicings of Indian music is a subtle art that comes with time. Harry spent most of twelve years in India learning that. It was later on that Harry decided to explore the connection between Indian ragas and blues scales which eventually led to the Indo-blues hybrid that has become his style. \nHarry Manx is accompanied by Emily Carr String Quartet. The new arrangements of the songs has taken a whole new life with the addition of the strings. SUMMARY:CRFF - Paterson
DESCRIPTION:Paterson\, the new film from Jim Jarmusch focuses on a working-class poet (Adam Driver) in a small New Jersey town who practices his craft amidst the quiet magic of everyday life. \nSmall-town American life has inspired filmmakers for over a century. In the process\, it has created a storytelling tradition that counters the big-city syndrome of so many New York and Los Angeles–set films. With Paterson\, Jim Jarmusch brings his unique observational eye to both a character and a community that bear the same name\, hinting at ideas of continuity and stability\, in this case found in both place and person. Jarmusch has previously focused on the quotidian; his films are quiet and reflective\, and in many respects cut against the grain of most contemporary American filmmaking. Here he has created a film that gently transforms the ordinary into the transcendent. \nPaterson (Adam Driver) works as a bus driver in Paterson\, New Jersey — an ordinary working guy in a run-of-the-mill small city. His life is regulated clockwork: up around 6am\, home by 6pm\, walk the dog\, drop by the local tavern\, down a beer\, chat with the bartender. His wife is a perfect match. Laura (Golshifteh Farahani) is as even-handed and -tempered as her husband. But there’s more to these characters’ internal lives. Paterson is a poet and Laura a repressed artistic gadfly. Each day before driving the streets\, Paterson scrawls a poem in his notebook\, and each evening Laura welcomes him home with a new and quirky surprise. Throughout\, Jarmusch envelopes these characters\, and their community\, with a magical yet perfectly balanced air of simplicity and well-being. \nWilliam Carlos Williams\, who wrote the epic poem Paterson\, is a touchstone\, as are the poets Wallace Stevens and Frank O’Hara\, but Jarmusch is\, as always\, very much his own artist\, and his unique voice is articulated through Driver and Farahani’s note-perfect performances. This Zen-like master has done it again\, providing us with an offbeat meditation on the couple and their desire for creative self-expression.
