DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss the annual Haig-Brown Lecture by renowned singer and ecology advocate Raffi Cavoukian\, titled “Respecting Earth and Child: Child Honouring and Sustainability”. Proudly co-presented by the Campbell River Museum\, Campbell River Arts Council and Haig-Brown Institute\, the event was created to honour the memory of celebrated Campbell River author Roderick Haig-Brown and has grown into an important voice for conservation. Raffi’s lecture will be accompanied by a short documentary film\, “Primeval: Enter the Incomappleux”\, by Campbell River’s own award-winning filmmaker Damien Gillis\, who will be on hand to introduce the film. \nKnown by his first name alone\, Raffi was a pioneer in quality recordings for kids on his indie label\, Troubadour. For millions of fans\, Raffi’s music was the soundtrack of their childhoods\, and they took his signature song\, “Baby Beluga\,” to heart. These “beluga grads” now share his music with their own kids. Raffi has been described by the Washington Post and the Toronto Star as the most popular children’s entertainer in the Western world\, and Canada’s all-time children’s champion. \nRaffi is a music producer\, author\, entrepreneur\, speaker\, and ecology advocate. He is the recipient of numerous honours\, including the Global 500 Roll\, the Order of Canada\, and the Order of BC.  He holds four honorary degrees and is a member of the Club of Budapest. \nIn a career spanning four decades\, Raffi has refused all commercial endorsement offers and has never taken part in direct advertising to children. In 2006\, he was awarded the Fred Rogers Integrity Award for this work. \nIn 2010\, Raffi founded The Centre for Child Honouring on Salt Spring Island\, BC.  With the motto “Respecting Earth and Child\,” the Centre is at the heart of a global movement that views honouring children as the best way to create sustainable\, peacemaking societies. \nHis recent work includes the book\, Lightweb Darkweb: Three Reasons To Reform Social Media Before It Re-Forms Us \, his new kids’ album\, Owl Singalong\, and the recently-released Best of Raffi. \nThe Haig-Brown Memorial Lecture Series was created by the Campbell River Arts Council in 2009\, and is a partnership of the Arts Council\, the Museum at Campbell River and the Haig-Brown Institute.  The intention is to honour the legacy of both Roderick Haig- Brown and Ann Haig-Brown (nee Elmore).  Roderick Haig-Brown (1908-1976) applied his passion equally to fishing\, writing\, conservation\, and public service and left behind a strong legacy of literary excellence\, centered on the rivers of British Columbia. His work represented an early environmental voice.  Ann Elmore was a major force for social justice issues in Campbell River\, notably around the challenges facing women.  The Ann Elmore Transition House is named in her honour. DESCRIPTION:Set in Germany and France in the immediate aftermath of the First World War\, (1914-1918)\, Frantz recalls the mourning period that follows great national tragedies as seen through the eyes of the war’s “lost generation”: Anna (21 year-old Paula Beer in a breakthrough performance)\, a bereft young German woman whose fiancé\, Frantz\, was killed during trench warfare\, and Adrien (Pierre Niney\, Yves Saint Laurent)\, a French veteran of the war who shows up mysteriously in her town\, placing flowers on Frantz’s grave. Adrien’s presence is met with resistance by the small community still reeling from Germany’s defeat\, yet Anna gradually gets closer to the handsome and melancholy young man\, as she learns of his deep friendship with Frantz\, conjured up in evocative flashbacks. What follows is a surprising exploration of how Ozon’s characters’ wrestle with their conflicting feelings – survivor’s guilt\, anger at one’s losses\, the overriding desire for happiness despite everything that has come before\, and the longing for sexual\, romantic and familial attachments. SUMMARY:The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer
DESCRIPTION:The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer are relentless touring artists known for their high-energy\, sweaty\, dance-floor-boogying performances. Otherwise known as HAM\, the Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer is Shawn ‘The Harpoonist’ Hall and Matthew ‘The Axe Murderer’ Rogers. Hall provides the rousing\, rugged vocals and blues harmonica\, while Rogers rips on the guitar and pounds the skins with his feet. The pair met and bonded over music while recording a radio jingle. \nTheir memorable name is inspired by a lyric from Kris Kristofferson’s Bobby McGee that references the blues harp\, (“I took my harpoon out of my dirty red bandana”) and then “axe” being a common term for the guitar. \nTheir influences range from the iconic songwriting of Willie Dixon to the boundary pushing of Jack White and Danger Mouse. But\, show organizers say their sound is distinctly their own\, smothered in greasy\, gritty soul and imbued with funk. \nElaborating\, promoters call their music “unapologetic. It slaps you in the face and makes you sweat like it’s a sticky\, summer night. It cuts you to the core. It’s the blues played the way it was meant to be played.” \nThe pair has received considerable recognition in the last few years. They have been nominated for multiple Maple Blues Awards and won blues act of the year at the SiriusXM Indies in 2013. They have also pounded their fair share of festival stages\, including SXSW 2013/14\, Winnipeg Folk Fest\, Ottawa Blues Fest\, Calgary Folk Fest\, and Montreal Jazz Fest. \nAlong the way they’ve shared the stage with Taj Mahal\, Booker T\, Jones\, David Wilcox\, Mother Mother\, The Sheep Dogs\, and Serena Ryder. SUMMARY:Learning from the Master: The Legacy of Sam Henderson
DESCRIPTION:The Museum at Campbell River\, in partnership with the Campbell River Festival of Film\, presents the latest addition to the Museum’s “Living History” documentary film series\, Learning from the Master; The Legacy of Sam Henderson.  \nIn an understated shed on Campbell River’s waterfront\, a family tradition of carving is being passed from one generation to another.  Kwakwaka’wakw master carver\, Sam Henderson carved the Kwakiutl Bear Pole in 1966 as part of the B.C. Centennial Route of the Totems. The pole stood in Campbell River for over 50 years.  Gradually the forces of  time and the weathering effects of the  elements caused it to decay beyond repair.  This documentary follows his son\, Bill Henderson\, and grandson\, Junior Henderson\, as they create a new replacement pole for the grounds of the Museum at Campbell River. \nFrom the ceremonial burning of the old pole\, to the blessing of the new pole\, hear directly from the next generations of carvers about family\, tradition\, and the art of “making wood speak”. \nAfter the film\, the carvers will be on hand to answer questions. \nTickets: $8 Admission (includes GST\, +applicable fees)
