SUMMARY:Ripple Rock: Celebrating 60 Years
DESCRIPTION:The Museum’s 60th Anniversary coincides with the 60th Anniversary of the Ripple Rock explosion.  To celebrate both\, the Museum is hosting an evening at the Tidemark Theatre on April 5 from 7 pm-9 pm to remember the blast that ‘shook the world’. \nRipple Rock\, an underwater mountain within Seymour Narrows near Campbell River BC\, was a marine hazard responsible for more than 20 large vessels and at least 100 smaller vessels sinking or being damaged. Before its destruction in 1958\, Ripple Rock claimed at least 114 lives. \nWhen Ripple Rock blew at 9:31:02 am April 5\, 1958\, the sight was stupendous. Seven hundred thousand tons (635\,028 tonnes) of rock and water erupted in a blast that reached a height of 1\,000 feet (305 m). The spectacle lasted less than 10 seconds before the debris was engulfed in a cloud of gas. \nAt the Tidemark we will screen the original CBC coverage of the event from 1958.  Following that film we will review the Museum’s documentary ‘Remembering Ripple Rock’. This film was produced through a partnership between CRTV and the Museum at Campbell River in 2008 in order to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the explosion.  It is a documentary that captures the reflections of those who remember the blast day of April 5th\, 1958.  The film is an interesting mix of local recollection alongside national television coverage. In between songs the band engages with the audience sharing stories from their 30+ years together as a band.  In January 2016 they released La Difference: A History Unplugged that feature 10 of their greatest hits recorded as never heard them before. \n54·40 has an unbelievable catalogue of hit songs that they can pull from to include in their live performances. She was fleeing her ex-boyfriend Steve\, who’d been abusing her on a daily basis. \nNow\, all these years later\, Attiya has asked Steve to meet. She wants to know how he remembers their relationship and if he is willing to take responsibility for his violent actions. \nThis emotionally raw first meeting\, filmed by Attiya with Steve’s consent\, is the starting point for A Better Man. The rough footage also marks a new beginning in Attiya’s own recovery process — as well as an important starting point for Steve. For the first time ever\, he speaks of the abuse and cracks opens the door to dealing with the past. \nIlluminating a unique paradigm for domestic violence prevention\, A Better Man offers a fresh and nuanced look at the healing and revelation that can happen for everyone involved when men take responsibility for their abuse.
