DESCRIPTION:The Tidemark Theatre Society\, Campbell River Arts Council\, and Museum at Campbell River are pleased to present a screening of Maker of Monsters: The Extraordinary Life of Beau Dick\, with a special Q&A session following the screening with Beau’s daughter\, Linnea Dick. \nMaker of Monsters gives an intimate look into the life of one of Canada’s greatest artists. Beau Dick worked within an ancient tradition and rose to the ranks of international success within the white cube world of contemporary art while never forgetting his roots. This film strives to capture the essence of Beau Dick and his mysterious enigma as an artist who symbolized Canada’s history with the First Nations and the ethical dilemmas faced in reconciling with that colonialist history. Beau was able to use his celebrity to call attention to the injustices done to his people and the environment. \nEven in his activism\, Beau relied on his culture to inform him how to be political. He didn’t simply stage protests; he enacted ancient ceremonies\, creating a public display infused with spirituality. He challenged the Canadian government\, chief-to-chief\, on his own terms and by using traditional Kwakwaka’wakw political protocol\, with minor adjustments for the contemporary situation. He carried out the ceremonial act of breaking a Copper and shaming the Canadian government on two occasions. First\, on the steps of the Parliament Building in Victoria\, BC\, and then one year later on the steps of Parliament Hill in Ottawa. The Copper Breaking Ceremony is a spiritual and political act that had not been performed in over 100 years. \nIn reaching into his past\, the stories of the Kwakwaka’wakw nations are also brought to the forefront; their rich history\, their dramatic mythology\, and the deep scars left by colonialism. Weaving together the personal and cultural until both become inseparable\, Meet Beau Dick presents an artist who succeeded in reconciling the two. \nMaker of Monsters strives to unearth the factors that made Beau who he was – his deep connection to identity\, family\, and community\, his struggle with addiction – and like a carver chipping away at a block of wood\, his story brings truth and understanding out of the woodwork. Meet Beau Dick illuminates a man whose art and life continue to transcend expectations and boundaries. \nLinnea Dick \nLinnea Dick is a writer\, orator and activist from the Kwakwaka’wakw\, Nisga’a and Tsimshian nations. She became involved in Indigenous activism in 2013 with a conviction to create social change and help heal the injustices faced by Indigenous peoples. Through this work\, she began to heal and recognize her purpose in life – to advocate for Indigenous youth\, culture and sexual assault victims through public speaking. During the last two years\, she worked closely with UBC\, where her late father\, Beau Dick\, was an artist in residence. He continues to be one of the biggest inspirations in life; a strong sense of identity\, integrity and dignity instilled within her. In 2015\, she had a written piece published in the book Lalakenis/All Directions: A Journey of Truth and Unity\, sharing her journey through activist movement “Awalaskenis” and the importance of connection to culture. More recently\, she collaborated with artist\, Jeneen Frei Njootli\, sharing poetry for her artist project “red rose and lidii\,” published in C Magazine — a contemporary art magazine. Linnea continues to share her story through different avenues\, and in her spare time enjoys writing\, hiking\, meditation and yoga. SUMMARY:Shaun Majumder
DESCRIPTION:Shaun Majumder is a premiere entertainer and comedian. The Gemini Award-winning actor\, host and comedian hails from Burlington\, Newfoundland (population 350). He may be best recognized as the co-host of CBC’s This Hour Has 22 Minutes. \nHe is also a favourite of the internationally renowned Just for Laughs Comedy Festival\, having hosted the TV series for three seasons. \nShaun starred in the Farrelly Brothers Fox comedy entitled Unhitched\, which debuted in March 2008. Shaun’s Comedy Central Presents special also debuted on Comedy Central in April 2008. Shaun’s television career has also included appearances on Fox’s 24\, Cedric the Entertainer Presents\, and he has been a cast member of the critically acclaimed Canadian series This Hour Has 22 Minutes. \nShaun was recently a guest star on Robson Arms on CTV\, the new series Less Than Kind\, which will debut this fall on CHUM network\, and on Da Kink in My Hair on Global TV. His film credits include\, Harold and Kumar go to White Castle\, The Ladies Man\, Pushing Tin\, and Purpose and most recently\, Bob Funk alongside Rachel Leigh Cook and Olympia Dukakis. Shaun is also a favorite of Montreal’s Just for Laughs Comedy festival having hosted the TV series for three seasons. SUMMARY:Sonny Assu: A Selective History
DESCRIPTION:Sonny Assu (Liǥwildaʼx̱w of the Kwakwaka’wakw Nations) was raised in North Delta\, BC\, over 250 km away from his home ancestral home Campbell River. Having been raised as your everyday average suburbanite\, it wasn’t until he was eight years old that he discovered his Liǥwildaʼx̱w/Kwakwaka’wakw heritage. Later in life\, this discovery would be the conceptual focal point of his contemporary art practice. \nJoin Sonny as he reflects on his politically charged\, often humorous and diverse work. Guests are encouraged to stay for refreshments and a meet & greet with the artist in the Tidemark Gallery\, directly following his talk. This is a free event and everyone is welcome! \nAbout the Book: \nA stunning retrospective highlighting the playfulness\, power\, and subversive spirit of Northwest Coast Indigenous artist Sonny Assu. \nThrough large-scale installation\, sculpture\, photography\, printmaking\, and painting\, Sonny Assu merges the aesthetics of Indigenous iconography with a pop-art sensibility. This stunning retrospective spans over a decade of Assu’s career\, highlighting more than 120 full-colour works\, including several never-before-exhibited pieces. \nThrough analytical essays and personal narratives\, Richard Van Camp\, Marianne Nicolson\, Candice Hopkins\, and Ellyn Walker provide brilliant commentary on Assu’s practice\, its meaning in the context of contemporary art\, and its wider significance in the struggle for Indigenous cultural and political autonomy. Barron\, she hosts The Barron Gurl Show every week in Vancouver’s West End\, as well as Drag 101\, a monthly show at UBC’s Pit Pub. As the Queen Mother of the Cobalt\, a space she helped transform into a vital queer hub\, she hosted her own weekly show Apocalypstick for two years and was a monthly fixture at Queer Bash\, East Van’s premiere queer dance party. She is currently the head judge ushering in new talent for the Mr/Miss Cobalt Competition\, in its 7th year. \nIn boy form he produces & curates Club PuSh for the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival and is founder and Managing Artistic Director of Zee Zee Theatre celebrating their tenth season. He is a critically acclaimed director and graduate of Studio 58 who further trained with Pochinko clown master\, John Turner. \nPeach Cobblah \nPeach Cobblah is known as the Baddest B&*#h of Vancouver. With her wife Isolde N. Barron she co-created Tucked & Plucked: Drag Herstory Live Onstage which has appeared extensively over the past six years. Peach created and for the past four years has hosted Shame Spiral\, a devilishly regretful weekly drag show at 1181 in Vancouver’s West End. She also helped revive the queer East Van scene with events like HUSTLA\, the city’s original queer hip hop event\, The Gay Agenda: Glitter & Skin\, a monthly party celebrating all forms of masculinity\, the annual Mr/Miss Cobalt Drag Competition\, Eye Roll: Another F$%*ing 90s Party\, and Limp Wrist\, celebrating queer icons. She can be seen sweating and swaying all over town in her monthly and pop-up events like Drag 101 at UBC and Queen\, Eggs\, and Ham\, a delicious an devilish brunch show.
