SUMMARY:Relive the Music - 50's & 60's Rock N'Roll
DESCRIPTION:A brand new one of a kind show\, that takes the audience through chronological Music History\, Trivia & Memories of the 50’s & 60’s.  You will likely learn many things you never knew about these artists. You will see an energetic live band and amazing singers transforming and re-living thru two decades of costumes\, trends\, dances with video imagery and voiceovers in the background. \nThe audience will see silhouettes of a band onstage\, video will roll in the background with narrating trivia prior to each song.  There will be a pause. The audience is encouraged to shout out their guess of what song is coming up. The song starts\, the crowd cheers with “oohs” and “ahhs” as some got it right and some got it wrong and others go “Wow\, I didn’t know that”. \nWe sorted through 20 years of over a thousand songs into a one – 100 minute show. The main criteria was to trim it to hit songs that are still relevant and memorable still to this day. We made our pick of songs that we feel will never get old. \nHit songs by Patti Page\, Dean Martin\, Johnny Cash\, Fats Domino\, Frank Sinatra\, Little Richard\, The Platters\, Bill Haley and the Comets\, Elvis\, Paul Anka\, Patsy Cline\, Jerry Lee Lewis\, Ritchie Valens\, Buddy Holly\, Ricky Nelson\, Chuck Berry\, Paul Anka\, The Platters\, Chubby Checker\, Dion\, The Four Seasons\, The Beatles\, Roy Orbison\, The Temptations\, The Supremes\, The Rolling Stones\, Sonny and Cher\, James brown and more…. \nThe grandparents of today that grew up in this era should bring along their children\, grandchildren and great grandchildren to see how cool they really were back then\, how great the music and dance moves were and not to forget the fantastic cars back then. You will have to explain to these younguns a few things like what a 45 record is\, A side\, B side\, and that there was no such thing as a cell phone. SUMMARY:CRFF- Capernaum
DESCRIPTION:Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival\, Nadine Labaki’s CAPERNAUM (“Chaos”) tells the story of Zain (Zain al Rafeea)\, a Lebanese boy who sues his parents for the “crime” of giving him life. CAPERNAUM follows Zain\, a gutsy streetwise child as he flees his negligent parents\, survives through his wits on the streets\, takes care of Ethiopian refugee Rahil (Yordanos Shiferaw) and her baby son\, Yonas (Boluwatife Treasure Bankole)\, being jailed for a crime\, and finally\, seeks justice in a courtroom. \nCAPERNAUM was made with a cast of non-professionals playing characters whose lives closely parallel their own. Following her script\, Labaki placed her performers in scenes and asked them to react spontaneously with their own words and gestures. When the non-actors’s instincts diverged from the written script\, Labaki adapted the screenplay to follow them. While steeped in the quiet routines of ordinary people\, CAPERNAUM is a film with an expansive palette: without warning it can ignite with emotional intensity\, surprise with unexpected tenderness\, and inspire with flashes of poetic imagery. What comes next may be a classic song by Joni Mitchell or Louis Prima. It may be an old bebop standard or cheeky arrangement of a 1980s hit. But these are arrangements like you’ve never heard them before—containing all the richness of a full band\, but performed using just four voices. \nThis is Cadence\, Canada’s premiere vocal group. Based in Toronto\, this a cappella ensemble has been wowing audiences across the country and around the world for nearly 20 years. Whether performing at sold-out jazz clubs and concert halls\, at music festivals\, for educational outreach\, or for corporate functions\, the members of Cadence bring an infectious energy and uncanny verve to every song they sing. \nThe group’s four critically acclaimed studio albums\, Cool Yule (2011)\, Speak Easy (2010)\, Twenty for One (2005)\, and Frost Free(2000) have won or been nominated for numerous awards\, including three nods from the JUNO Awards and 10 from CARA\, the Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards. \nCadence’s live shows are always a hit. DESCRIPTION:Including hits of The Traveling Wilburys and Everly Brothers \nThe Big O was unmistakable with his trademark sunglasses\, his distinctive\, powerful voice\, his complex compositions and the dark emotional ballads we all love. SUMMARY:Edge of the Knife (Sgaawaay K'uuna)
DESCRIPTION:Arriving more than a century after British Columbia’s first-ever feature film\, In the Land of the Head Hunters — Edward S. Curtis’ controversial but undeniably fascinating portrait of the Kwakwaka’wakw people of northern Vancouver Island — Edge of the Knife is the first feature to tell a story about the Kwakwaka’wakw’s neighbours the Haida. Part drama\, part historical reclamation\, First Nations directors Gwaai Edenshaw and Helen Haig-Brown’s film is set during the 19th century and performed entirely in the Haida language (a tongue so endangered\, with less than 20 fluent speakers\, that a dialect coach was needed). \nWhereas Curtis remained an outside observer\, transfixed by the Kwakwaka’wakw’s masks and regalia\, Edge of the Knife has a genuine Indigenous eye akin not only to other films by distributor Isuma (Zacharias Kunuk has an executive producer credit)\, but also from supernatural neorealist fables from African and Latin American filmmakers. Inspired by the Gaagiixiid/Gaagiid wildman of Haida mythology\, the film charts a simple narrative about a reckless uncle who can’t bear the guilt of having unwittingly led a beloved nephew to his demise\, and whose abnegation takes on a horrific physical form over a winter of self-imposed exile in the wild. DESCRIPTION:Vancouver\, B.C. has always been a musical town. But back in the day\, as far as sizzling\, soulful funk\, it was something of a desert … until some mysterious force drew two young cats together who would change that in a hurry. \nFrom their first house party jams\, drummer Tayo Branston and guitarist Gabe Boothroyd gathered a community of musicians who shared their love for James Brown\, Tower Of Power\, Tito Puente\, Antibalas\, Frank Zappa and other adventurous groove-driven players. They called themselves Five Alarm Funk\, drew more than 300 fans to their first gig at a local place called The Fairview Pub\, established a residency at Richards On Richards where upwards of 800 attendees would show up each night – to eventually embark on a 37-day\, cross-continental track involving 30 shows from Vancouver to Fredericton. \nSince then\, they’ve expanded their lineup to include Eli Bennett on sax\, Oliver Gibson on guitar\, Tom Towers on congas\, Carl Julig on timbales\, Kent Wallace on trumpet\, Jay Smith on bass\, and Jens Christiansen on sax. They’ve broadened their territory to include the U.S.\, played as far afield as Taiwan\, rocked the Riverbend Festival in Chattanooga\, Tennessee\, and begun releasing EPs and CDs. The most recent of these\, 2017’s Sweat\, explodes with fiery rhythms\, punchy horns and gang-chant vocals that sum up the irresistible essence of this band. \nThey’re now deep into a new project that involves adding all-star guest vocals onto some of the more volatile tracks from their catalog\, beginning with a Bootsy Collins appearance. “I’ve been a Bootsy Collins fan ever since I was 15\,” Branston marvels. “That track we gave him\, ‘Capital City\,’ is one of the funkiest things we’ve ever cut. With that experience and our back catalog\, you’ll see a lot more of this from us.” \nWith future releases and reissues with big-time rappers and funksters on the horizon\, their sights are set on bringing their magic to festivals throughout the world. SUMMARY:Carlos del Junco and the Blues Mongrels
DESCRIPTION:Carlos del Junco\, Cuban-Canadian harmonica master\, fashions sound the way Michelangelo sculpted his David: with daring and sensuality (Carlos actually graduated from Ontario College of Arts in his mid twenties with honours majoring in sculpture)! Considered one of the world’s greatest harmonica players\, he is a pioneer of the “overblow” technique\, allowing him to play a 10 hole diatonic harmonica chromatically. The result is stunning: an eclectic blend of soundscapes from the sublime to quirky that often conjure different instruments\, from the sax to an electric guitar\, and from violin to the bagpipes! \nSimultaneously sophisticated and raw\, his playing blurs the boundaries between blues\, jazz and “roots” music (hence the name for his band The Blues Mongrels). In the Super Hero Theatre Camp you will explore character development as you create your own super hero. Explore movement and take on those who challenge you. Help bring balance back to the planet while learning theatre and improv.
