DESCRIPTION:Ritesh Batra (The Lunchbox\, The Sense of an Ending) returns with another nuanced love story\, about the hopes\, dreams\, and identities of ordinary people. With gentle poignancy\, Batra explores moments of both isolation and connection amidst the otherwise chaotic urban landscape of Mumbai. \nAn unlikely couple who come from different walks of life meet in a busy public square. Miloni (Sanya Malhotra\, Pataakha) is a shy young woman studying to become an accountant. Rafi (Nawazuddin Siddiqui\, Lion\, The Lunchbox) is an older\, reclusive street photographer\, who makes ends meet by taking portraits of tourists at city landmarks. One day Rafi takes Miloni’s portrait\, and it leaves an indelible imprint on them both. \nA short time later\, when Rafi’s elderly grandmother — who has always hoped Rafi would start a family — comes to town\, Rafi tracks down Miloni and convinces her to pretend to be his fiancée in order to make his grandmother happy. DESCRIPTION:Campbell River Arts Council\, Museum at Campbell River\, and Haig Brown Institute present the 10th Annual Haig Brown Lecture: \nReflections on Shrinking Fish and Warming Oceans—a talk by famed fishery biologist Daniel Pauly followed by a showing of  ‘An Ocean Mystery: the Missing Catch‘\, which explores Daniel Pauly’s work\, by Alison Barrat \nDid you know that fish as they get older are oxygen limited\, which explains why they become smaller in warming waters? The world’s fisheries are changing and no one has documented the trends of overfishing and under-reporting of catches as doggedly as Daniel Pauly. Come hear the outspoken fishery biologist and author of Vanishing Fish share stories about shrinking fish\, shifting baselines and warming oceans. \nBio \nBorn in Paris as the son of a Frenchwoman and an African American soldier\, Pauly had a “Dicksonian” childhood in Switzerland. After rejecting an educational career in agronomy (the German professors were old Nazis) Pauly was trained as a fishery biologist to serve the growing fish trawling industry. As he witnessed and documented that industry’s impacts on ocean ecosystem in Asia\, Latin America and Africa\, he realized that only people could force governments to stop overfishing. In 1995 he coined the phrase “shifting baselines”  which explains why governments have been so slow to respond to overfishing or climate change. The UBC professor\, author of more than 1000 articles and 30 books\, now directs the Sea Around Us\, a non-profit dedicated to studying and changing how industrial fishing impoverishes marine ecosystems.  Pauly\, a speaker of four languages has been honoured in Canada\, France and Germany for his pioneering work on the state of global fisheries. He says that his two great scientific mentors remain Charles Darwin and Rachel Carson. Science\, Nature and the New York Times have profiled his iconoclastic science. \nFilm \n An Ocean Mystery: The Missing Catch by Alison Barrat takes viewers on fish detective story from Africa to Newfoundland.  It explores the data tracking of Daniel Pauly and explains why so many catches go unreported.“We need to know how many fish have been taken from the ocean in order to figure out what we can catch in the future\,” warns Pauly. \nTickets: $15 Admission (+applicable taxes & fees)

SUMMARY:Big Wreck
DESCRIPTION:Big Wreck was formed in Boston in the early 90’s by Toronto-native (guitars / vocals) Ian Thornley and Americans Brian Doherty (guitars)\, Forrest Williams (drums) and Dave Henning (bass)\, students at the Berkley School of Music.  Their 1997 debut album\, In Loving Memory\, is certified double platinum in Canada and featured the chart topping singles “Blown Wide Open\,” “That Song” and “The Oaf”. \nIn 2002\, the band broke up following the release of their sophomore album\, The Pleasure and The Greed\, after which Ian Thornley formed the band Thornley who also enjoyed rock radio success with several singles. \nIn 2010\, Brian Doherty filled in on guitar at a Thornley show and shortly thereafter\, he and Ian started working on new material that would be\, once again\, christened Big Wreck.  Their first single as a reunited Big Wreck\, “Albatross\,” became the band’s first #1 single at Rock radio in Canada. Since then\, they have released three new Big Wreck albums (Albatross – 2012; Ghosts – 2014; Grace Street – 2017).  In the winter of 2018 Big Wreck began recording their sixth studio album with producer Erik Ratz.  It was during the recording that Doherty was diagnosed with cancer which tragically took his life this past Spring after the new album was completed.  Big Wreck’s latest album will be released later this summer followed by extensive touring.  The release of the album was preceded by the Top 5 Rock Radio hit “Locomotive.” \nBig Wreck is Ian Thornley\, Dave McMillan\, & Chuck Keeping \nTickets: $55 First 5 rows\, $45 Admission (+applicable taxes & fees) On sale Friday\, July 26th at 10 am!

DESCRIPTION:Exhilarating\, suspenseful\, and emotionally charged\, this documentary from director Alex Holmes chronicles Tracy Edwards’ 1989–90 precedent-setting sea voyage around the world with an all-female crew. \nThe Whitbread Round the World Race (rechristened the Volvo Ocean Race in 2001) was considered an exclusively masculine endeavour when Edwards came along and\, in the face of much sexist condescension\, proved that skill\, perseverance\, and courage at sea know no gender. \nMaiden traces Edwards’ formative experiences: the idyllic childhood that came to a devastating halt with her father’s death and the adolescent rebelliousness that resulted in her expulsion from school. At 16\, she ran away to Greece\, where she had her first taste of the seafaring life\, rapidly graduating from cook to deckhand to first mate. She was still in her mid-twenties when she became determined to participate in the Whitbread with a crew of talented women from around the world. \nWith its fundraising challenges and heated rivalries\, the journey to prepare the Maiden was already complicated. But it was just the beginning of an epic adventure. \nHolmes crafts a captivating braid of archival materials and new interviews in which Edwards and her crew members — all of them rousing storytellers — collectively narrate their experience. It is a classic tale of people contending with the elements\, though\, in this case\, some of those elements are other people. As a high school student he began working in television at age 16 at the former community access cable channel CRTV. He was a high school media at Timberline and then moved to Vancouver and graduated from BCIT in 1993. He began working as a news cameraman at a Vancouver news station before making the transition to documentary and commercial projects. \nChurchill\, won the Cinematography Award in the category of small budget films at last year’s Wildscreen Festival. A blurb on the Wildscreen website bills the seven-minute film as an “experimental visual poem dedicated to the town and polar bears of Churchill\, Manitoba.” \nThe award for Churchill is the latest in a series of honours for Ian.  He’s also the winner of an Emmy\, a Gemini and a number of other accolades. \nTickets: $12 Admission (+applicable taxes & fees)
