DESCRIPTION:Anne of Green Gables – The Ballet™ is a playful\, colourful and evocative production that will transport audiences to early 20th century Atlantic Canada. Based on the beloved Canadian novel by Lucy Maud Montgomery\, Anne of Green Gables – The Ballet™ follows the adventures of Anne Shirley\, an orphan girl sent to live on a farm in the fictional town of Avonlea\, Prince Edward Island. \nAnne of Green Gables is a 1908 novel by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery (published as L. M. Montgomery). Written for all ages\, it has been considered a children’s novel since the mid-twentieth century. It recounts the adventures of Anne Shirley\, an 11-year-old orphan girl who is mistakenly sent to Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert\, a middle-aged brother and sister who had intended to adopt a boy to help them on their farm in the fictional town of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island. The novel recounts how Anne makes her way with the Cuthberts\, in school\, and within the town. \nAnne Shirley\, a young orphan from the fictional community of Bolingbroke\, Nova Scotia (based upon the real community of New London\, Prince Edward Island)\, is sent to live with Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert\, siblings in their fifties and sixties\, after a childhood spent in strangers’ homes and orphanages. Marilla and Matthew had originally decided to adopt a boy from the orphanage to help Matthew run their farm at Green Gables\, which is set in the fictional town of Avonlea. Through a misunderstanding\, the orphanage sends Anne instead. \nAnne is highly imaginative\, eager to please and\, at times\, quite a dramatic individual. However\, she is defensive about her appearance\, despising her red hair and pale\, thin frame. She is often quite talkative\, especially when it comes to describing her fantasies and dreams. At first\, stern and sharp Marilla says Anne must return to the orphanage\, but after much observation and considering\, along with Matthew’s strong liking to Anne\, she decides to let her stay. \nAs a child of imagination\, Anne takes much joy in life and adapts quickly\, thriving in the close-knit farming village. Her imagination and talkativeness soon brighten up Green Gables. \nCanada’s Ballet Jörgen is Canada’s fifth largest ballet company and the nation’s only major ballet company with a repertoire consisting exclusively of original works. It was founded in 1987 by Susan Bodie and Bengt Jörgen and is based in Toronto\, Ontario. The company also has hubs in Ottawa\, Hamilton\, Kitchener-Waterloo\, and Halifax. Many of Canada’s Ballet Jörgen ballets have earned national and international recognition propelling the company to the forefront of the North American dance scene. \nDirectly following the performance will be a reception hosted by Grieg Seafood B.C. to celebrate their 20th anniversary in 2020. SUMMARY:Art Reception - 'Splice' by Justice Schanfarber
DESCRIPTION:On February 11 at 5:30 pm\, the Tidemark Art Gallery will host an opening reception for ‘Splice’\, a collection of new large abstract paintings and collage work by Justice Schanfarber. \nJustice Schanfarber is a self-taught artist living and working in Campbell River. He makes large and small abstract paintings that sometimes include collage and assemblage. \nJustice helped shape Vancouver BC’s art-rock and experimental music scene in the 90’s with his unique sound collage recordings and performances. Today Justice works as a couples therapist and he brings his psychological experience and insights to his visual art practice. \n“The purpose of my art practice is to engage with aesthetic forces that I do not understand. My relationship with these forces deepens over time and proximity\, and also through the successful completion of work; hence my commitment to the practice of art making. \nWorking with unintended consequences is a crucial part of my practice. I take risks in materials and process\, making mistakes and then working with the mistakes. In this way mistakes are refined and redefined\, becoming synchronicities and blessings.” \n‘Splice’ will exhibit in the Tidemark Art Gallery from February 4 – March 31\, 2020 and can be viewed Tuesday through Friday from 12-4pm. An opening reception for the exhibit will be held at the Tidemark on February 11 from 5:30pm-7pm. In order for everyone to have a chance to say goodbye without tipping her off that the end is near\, they orchestrate an elaborate excuse to reunite in the form of a fake wedding. Though cultures clash and family conflict ensues\, the story is told with universally relatable warmth and charm. \nAwkwafina is dazzling as the quick-witted and empathetic Billi; she is supported by a remarkable cast that includes the charming Tzi Ma (Meditation Park\, Arrival) as her father and Diana Lin (Australia Day) as her mother. \nLittle by little\, we realize that this story is not only about Billi saying goodbye to her grandmother\, but also about her reconnecting with a country and extended family that she left behind at a young age. Recorded live off the floor in Nashville\, Tennessee\, celebrated songwriter Matt Andersen’s tenth album collects all the essential elements for a down-home ramble and shoots them through with enough electrifying energy to drive the rock ‘n’ roll faithful to simmer\, shimmy\, and shake. Over its lucky 13 tracks\, he explores every facet of his sound—sweat-soaked soul\, incendiary rhythm and blues\, heartbroken folk\, and gritty Americana—and binds them together with palpable heart\, as the band leaves everything they’ve got on the sweet old hardwood of the Southern Ground studio\, in the same spot that legends like Neil Young\, Emmylou Harris\, and Jerry Lee Lewis turned up the volume ‘til it couldn’t go up anymore. \nAlong with the infiltrating buzz of Music City putting its stamp on the record\, the studio itself became like a second home for Matt and the band. He and bassist Mike Farrington would routinely kick back with a drink and just listen to the horn section reminisce about the players they’d shared the stage with\, and the kitchen took on its typical all-important role as war room\, the spot where meals brought the whole crew together to plot next steps. SUMMARY:CRFF - Village Rockstars
DESCRIPTION:Local filmmaker Damien Gillis will be screening his short film\, Shadow Trap\, before the screening of Village Rockstars\, followed by a Q&A about the film. \nDhunu (Bhanita Das) wants a rock band. It’s an admirable goal for a young girl\, but out of reach when you live in a remote village in northeast India. And when your mother is a widow struggling to put food on the table\, dreams of electric guitars can seem like madness. Yet a guitar is exactly what drives Dhunu’s ambition. At 10 years old\, she is alive with a passion for music and a dazzling con­fidence in her own convictions. Rima Das’s second feature — selected as India’s submis­sion to the 2017 Academy Awards — paints an inspiring portrait of a young girl finding her own place in a world made for boys and men. \nDas grew up in the same village where she shot Village Rockstars and recruited a local\, non-professional cast. This may have seemed daring\, but the result is magic. The performances are natural and fresh. The marshlands and village textures are palpable in Das’s intimate\, widescreen camerawork. When the rains come\, they drench Dhunu and her playmates in scenes that could never be staged. \nIt’s an idyllic world\, although Dhunu still has to navigate the mysterious ways of adults and boys. The same boys who want to join her in rock-star glory tease and mis­treat her because she’s a girl. Her mother is a strong figure in her life\, but seems to have little patience for her daughter’s extravagant dreams. Meanwhile\, in Hazelton\, grubstaker Seamus Campbell and his shotgun-toting thug come to the Two Mile Saloon to collect a debt from failed prospector Danny Kelly. In desperation\, Kelly impulsively decides to head deep into the frozen wilds of the Skeena Mountains in pursuit of Gunanoot and the $1\,000 bounty on his head. \nKelly soon realizes he’s in over his head – the hunter becomes the hunted.
