SUMMARY:Rotary Honours Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Rotary Honours Concert celebrates the artistic talents of exceptional young people in our community with a free concert as Rotary’s gift to the City. It speaks to the dedication of teachers and parents in keeping the artistic threads of the past alive to pass on to future generations. As children’s author\, Hendrik Willem van Loon wrote: “The arts are an even better barometer of what is happening in our world than the stock market or the debates in congress.” The award winners chosen to perform in the 2020 RHC showcase this artistic talent\, as well as the variety and scope of the arts available in our community. \nThis year’s line up includes: \n\nKathy Mascia School of Dance\nSolstice Studio\nCarihi Jazz Band\nKate Choi\nKai Bailey and Trevor Potorieko\nCR DanceXtreme\nRainCoast School of Musical Theatre\nStudio North Dance\n\nRotarians have long been committed to serving youth in their communities: Rotary offers educational programs such as Rotary Peace Fellowships\, and provides grant funds for scholarships and service projects conducted by\, or benefiting\, youth. These student/youth programs can change the lives of those who participate; young people can earn scholarships\, travel on cultural exchanges\, or help a community through a service project. \nThe New Generations Avenue of Service – which became Rotary’s fifth “Avenue of Service” in 2010 – streamlines the exceptional work that Rotarians do with youth and young adults. It entrenches a fundamental idea: that every Rotarian has a responsibility to support the personal and professional success of young people\, while recognizing the diversity of their needs. \nTickets are free of charge\, we ask that you contact the box office to reserve your tickets. \nFirst come\, first served. SUMMARY:CRFF - Arab Blues
DESCRIPTION:Writer-director Manele Labidi delights with her feature debut\, a meditation on independence\, community\, and new beginnings. After 10 years of living in Paris\, Selma (Golshifteh Farahani\, Paterson\, Girls of the Sun) has returned to Tunis. Her younger cousin can’t figure out why she’d leave the French capital\, her aunt is overbearing\, and her uncle is only giving her a matter of weeks to crash in the apartment above their house. Selma\, nonetheless\, is steadfast in her resolve: to open up her own psychotherapy practice. \nAs Selma tries to settle in\, she’s faced with increasing complications that she — or her guiding patron Sigmund Freud — couldn’t have predicted. There isn’t just the matter of finding interested psychotherapy patients in a locale that’s not keen on the talking cure. She also needs to navigate a confusing bureaucratic circus in order to get the right papers to run her practice. On top of all that\, a strapping — albeit unbending — cop\, Naim (Majd Mastoura)\, is keeping a close eye on her every move. \nFarahani gives a powerful and compelling performance. She hits all the comic beats and deftly inhabits a character\, who\, above all\, wants to do what’s right. SUMMARY:Five Alarm Funk
DESCRIPTION:Vancouver\, B.C. has always been a musical town. But back in the day\, as far as sizzling\, soulful funk\, it was something of a desert … until some mysterious force drew two young cats together who would change that in a hurry. \nFrom their first house party jams\, drummer Tayo Branston and guitarist Gabe Boothroyd gathered a community of musicians who shared their love for James Brown\, Tower Of Power\, Tito Puente\, Antibalas\, Frank Zappa and other adventurous groove-driven players. They called themselves Five Alarm Funk\, drew more than 300 fans to their first gig at a local place called The Fairview Pub\, established a residency at Richards On Richards where upwards of 800 attendees would show up each night – to eventually embark on a 37-day\, cross-continental track involving 30 shows from Vancouver to Fredericton. \nSince then\, they’ve expanded their lineup to include Eli Bennett on sax\, Oliver Gibson on guitar\, Tom Towers on congas\, Carl Julig on timbales\, Kent Wallace on trumpet\, Jay Smith on bass\, and Jens Christiansen on sax. They’ve broadened their territory to include the U.S.\, played as far afield as Taiwan\, rocked the Riverbend Festival in Chattanooga\, Tennessee\, and begun releasing EPs and CDs. The most recent of these\, 2017’s Sweat\, explodes with fiery rhythms\, punchy horns and gang-chant vocals that sum up the irresistible essence of this band. \nThey’re now deep into a new project that involves adding all-star guest vocals onto some of the more volatile tracks from their catalog\, beginning with a Bootsy Collins appearance. “I’ve been a Bootsy Collins fan ever since I was 15\,” Branston marvels. “That track we gave him\, ‘Capital City\,’ is one of the funkiest things we’ve ever cut. With that experience and our back catalog\, you’ll see a lot more of this from us.” \nWith future releases and reissues with big-time rappers and funksters on the horizon\, their sights are set on bringing their magic to festivals throughout the world. DESCRIPTION:As a way to support the provincial government’s efforts to flatten the curve of coronavirus (COVID-19) spread\, we’ll be closing our box office to in person traffic until further notice. \nWe are working diligently with artists to reschedule all performances affected by the closure. The logistics of making these changes with a small but mighty staff are significant\, so we ask you to have patience with staff and hold on to your tickets until we have more information. DESCRIPTION:Join us this March for a Super Hero Theatre Camp like no other. Create your own super hero and be a part of a story of great discovery. Create costumes and props. Learn what happens on and off the stage\, operate lights\, sound or stage manage. Act as your very own super hero character. The future of Ceti is in your hands. \nIn the future the human race is forced to find and colonize new planets. Our story takes place far from Earth on Ceti. Humans have lived here for only one generation in a small area of the planet. As their children are growing they find they develop what can only be described as Super Powers. They search the planet for answers and find an indigenous race. Will they learn to live with them in peace and discover how to master their powers? Or will mankind be forced off the planet? \nThis year’s theatrical experience will be entirely created by the youth\, as they will not only be acting in the show but there will also be opportunities for them to work with mentors in Lighting\, Sound\, Set/Props and Stage Management. \nSuper Hero Theatre Camp will run during SD72’s spring break March 16 through 20th from 9am to 2pm at the Tidemark Theatre.
