DESCRIPTION:Hailing from Saskatoon\, three-time JUNO awarding winning artists THE SHEEPDOGS burst onto the international scene after beating out thousands of artists in 2011 to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine. Since then\, The Sheepdogs have amassed six JUNO nominations and toured worldwide. \n“Our goal is two-fold\,” Currie says. “We want to make killer albums that people really want to listen to\, but we also want to have a really reputable live show. When we come through town we want to be the hottest ticket there. Those two elements are what make a truly great rock and roll band. Really\, though\, we just want to play to anyone who is willing to give us a shot and who wants to have a good time.” \nThe Sheepdogs return this spring with music from their new album Outta Sight\, the grooviest\, simplest\, most penetrating album of their career. Recorded during the pandemic the band—Ewan Currie\, Ryan Gullen\, Sam Corbett\, Jimmy Bowskill and Shamus Currie—were\, like the rest of us\, confused\, cast ashore\, and feeling isolated during COVID. Their response was to do what came most naturally to them: making stripped-down rock ‘n’ roll. \n“It’s a weird world. Everybody stuck in place\, overthinking absolutely everything. We wanted to avoid all that—just get in the room\, plug in your guitar and go. So that’s what we did\,” says singer Ewan Currie\, who cut most of the album’s tracks in three takes. “Themes like optimism in the face of adversity\, standing tall and staying strong\, knowing that better times are around the corner kept coming through when making the record and it felt really damned good to play.” \nResponding to the pandemic—the fear\, the lack of income for a group that earns their living playing hundreds of annual shows—the Sheepdogs did what was instinctual to them since they started jamming like they did in their teens. With no roadmap and an overall uncertainty hanging over the universe\, the band got in a circle\, plugged into their amps\, shared riffs and melodies and leaned on each other. The guys say it was the least prepared they’ve been cutting a record since their self-titled album in 2012. Bassist Ryan Gullen calls the music they made a life raft. \n“Rock ‘n’ Roll is about cheering us up. Simple as that\,” says Currie. “We hope our music does the same for the listeners at a time where things still can feel very tough. DESCRIPTION:The Snowed In Comedy Tour has turned into a Canadian success story\, celebrating its fourteenth year. It has now grown to become the biggest comedy tour in Canada. Playing in 70 cities this year\, coast to coast. In a market still dominated by American acts\, with American TV credits\, a small Canadian comedy tour has managed to succeed. DESCRIPTION:Since the first Burns Dinner in 1801\, people have gathered to pay homage to this great Scottish Bard. \nJoin songsmith Bruce Coughlan with special guests Daniel Lapp\, fiddle & piano and René Cusson\, pipes & whistles and celebrate BURNS NIGHT 2023 with them in-person on Saturday January 21st or watch from anywhere – virtually through Livestream available for 48 hours until Robbie Burns Day! \nRobbie Burns (1759-1796) in his own time was a man of modest means\, spending most of his life an impoverished tenant farmer. But Burns possessed “mither wit and native fire” and his own words reveal much about the man\, his humility\, humanity\, passion\, compassion\, humour & insight. \n“As a songwriter myself\, I am especially drawn to his craft. He sports an extensive repertoire spanning an array of musical genres including Celtic\, Bluegrass\, Americana\, Folk\, Maritime\, Blues & more. Bruce has performed across Canada and in 38 USA states and has toured the United Kingdom on a dozen occasions. Since recording his first LP in 1984\, he has recorded 14 albums of his original and adapted traditional music across a broad range of the roots music genre. Bruce might be best recognised for his historically based ballads\, written on Pacific Canadian themes. He has been the composer and lead singer of Tiller’s Folly for over two decades. \nRené Cusson is renowned throughout the piping world as a musician\, competitive piper\, performer\, teacher\, adjudicator and composer. His music is performed all over the Celtic world and has been widely recorded at home and abroad. Added to his playing of various bagpipes is whistle playing and singing. DESCRIPTION:Veteran Polish filmmaker Jerzy Skolimowski’s gripping new drama\, which shared the Jury Prize at this year’s Cannes competition\, follows a sentient donkey as it experiences the best and worst mankind has to offer. \nTold through a series of visually striking vignettes and accompanied by a sweeping score\, the film’s anchor is the anthropomorphic eyes of a donkey that senses its way through the wheels of fortune. These include helpless indenturement inside a travelling circus under the care of wide-eyed Kasandra (Sandra Drzymalska)\, heading full speed for a glue factory on Mateo’s (Mateusz Kosciukiewicz) lorry\, a fractious adventure with prodigal son–turned-priest Vito (Lorenzo Zurzolo)\, and a peek inside the so-called good life in the bourgeois home of a bored housewife named The Countess (Isabelle Huppert). We are only left to guess what Eo — after seeing the best and worst of humanity — would think. \nSkolimowski’s chef d’oeuvre makes clear that we’re not so different from the most common beasts: we are born\, briefly experience suffering and (if lucky) love\, are unceremoniously exploited for our labour\, and then we die. EO\, a loving homage to Robert Bresson’s Au Hazard Balthazar\, is a beautifully photographed\, fable-like journey through contemporary Europe that asks us to live our lives with the same humility and dignity as our animals do. \n“[Skolimowski] eschews a conventional plot to make something that sits between fiction and non-fiction\, nature documentary and avant-garde mood piece. DESCRIPTION:In support of Family Literacy Week\, the Tidemark Theatre and Campbell River Literacy Association presents Haida & Squamish Stories with Kung Jaadee! \nKung Jaadee (Roberta Kennedy) is a professional storyteller\, educator and published author belonging to the X̱aayda (Haida)\, xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) First Nations. Her Haida name\, Kung Jaadee\, means ’Moon Woman’ and was presented to her at her great uncle’s memorial feast by her cousin Crystal Robinson. Over the past 28 years\, Kung Jaadee has performed traditional Haida legends\, while also sharing vivid personal stories about her clan’s survival of the smallpox epidemic\, and the history and culture of her people. She has performed at hundreds of festivals\, schools and Aboriginal celebrations across Canada. She is the author of the popular children’s books\, Raven’s Feast and Gifts from Raven (selected as a Local BC Book to Read)\, as well as curriculum textbooks\, Haida Nation: Indigenous Communities in Canada and We Are Home. Her stories have also been published in several anthologies\, magazines and online publications. Most recently\, Kung Jaadee worked as the Vancouver Public Library’s Indigenous Storyteller in Residence. \nWhile living in Haida Gwaii\, she taught X̱aad Kil\, the Haida language while working with the Old Masset Village Council\, at Chief Matthews School and the Haida Health Centre in Gaw Tlagee. Kung Jaadee holds a Bachelor of Arts with a major in English and minor in Women’s Studies from the University of Victoria and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta. \nIn her live storytelling performance\, Kung Jaadee shares her telling of a few famous Haida legends about Raven (Yaahl)\, the creator of the world\, and their universal teachings. Enjoy the stories of “Raven Brings the Water\,” Raven’s Brings the Light” and “Raven’s Feast.” She also shares some traditional Raven songs while using her drum\, teaches some basic words in X̱aad Kil (Haida language)\, and shows her traditional regalia. Includes a Q&A to discuss Haida culture\, traditions and history. \nThis performance is made possible in part by Theatre Angels donations. Please consider making a donation to the Theatre Angels program. \nTickets are free of charge\, we ask that you reserve your tickets in advance. \nIn person tickets are first come\, first served. Limit 4 tickets per household. DESCRIPTION:What’s Up\, Doc? is a one-day documentary film festival event with guest speakers to educate and enlighten people who may be questioning the new normal. Truth in an Age of Propaganda Film Festival will feature the film “Uninformed Consent”\, the most powerful documentary of the Covid era. Also playing will be the film “Anecdotal”\, a compassionate exploration of the nuanced vaccine debate. You will also hear from local BC doctors and healthcare professionals during the What’s Up\, Doc? Speakers Panel with Dr. Anna Kindy; Dr. Stephen Malthouse; Dr. Daniel Nagase\, MD; Dr. York Hsiang\, Vascular Surgeon & Professor at UBC; Michelle Riddle\, BSc\, OT\, & Founder of Global Alliance for Our Children’s Future; and Lisa Bernard\, RN\, Advocate for bodily autonomy. \nThe intent of these events is to educate people that may not be as informed and also provide space to comprehend truthful information in an age of propaganda and false narratives.
