SUMMARY:Alex Cuba
DESCRIPTION:Alex Cuba is a Grammy/Latin Grammy and Juno winning singer-songwriter/producer and musician\, born Alexis Puentes in Artemisa\, Cuba. He was immersed in music at a very young age\, joining his father’s (guitarist and teacher Valentin Puentes) group of 24 guitarists. Alex went on to study electric and upright bass\, touring and recording nationally and internationally. His sound is the unique confluence of tradition and global influences in articulate arrangements that convey emotions through melody and lyric. In 2022 he won a Grammy for Best Latin Pop for Mendó as producer\, artist and engineer. \nIn 1999\, Alex moved to Victoria\, Canada\, where he recorded an album\, Morumba Cubana\, alongside his twin brother Adonis\, as The Puentes Brothers. Alex went on to record his solo debut album Humo De Tobaco in which earned him a Juno award for World Music Album of the Year in 2006. Followed by Agua Del Pozo\, in 2007 which also earned him another Juno award for World Music Album of the Year in 2008. From there\, Alex released his third album\, a self-titled project Alex Cuba in 2009. The album features his first ever English track titled “If You Give Me Love”. In 2010\, Alex took home the award for Best New Artist at the 2010 Latin Grammy Awards\, where it was also nominated for Best Male Pop Vocal Album and was followed by a nomination for Best Latin Pop Album at the 53rd Annual Grammy Award in 2011 where Alex took home a BMI Latin Award for his song-writing on Nelly Furtado’s #1 Spanish hit “Manos Al Aire”. In 2012\, Alex released his fourth album Ruido En El Sistema\, a year which Alex received his second Socan Hagood Hardy Award for outstanding achievement in Jazz and World Music. He also won his second Latin Grammy Award – this time as a songwriter\, alongside co- writer Yoel Henriquez received the award for Best Tropical Song for the Milly Quezada’s single\, “Toma Mi Vida”feat. Juan Luis Guerra. In 2013\, he again brought home a Latin Grammy for the video “Eres Tu” from Ruido En El Sistema\, a video produced entirely in his hometown of Smithers. \nAlex Cuba’s 5th studio album\, Healer\, was recorded in New York\, USA and Victoria\, Canada\, using a live rhythm section\, trading in horns for guitars and vocal harmonies. With five duets with singer songwriters\, four being Canadian\, Ron Sexsmith\, David Myles\, Alejandra Ribera and Kuba Oms as well as New Yorker Anya Marina. The album won a Latin Grammy for best Singer- songwriter and nominated for a Grammy as best Latin Pop in 2016. \nIn 2017\, Alex completed his 6th album Lo Unico Constante\, beginning in Spain and passing through Montreal to record a single with Jean Massicotte. Then meeting up with the rhythm section from Healer in Baker Studios to record and mix 12 songs that delve deeper into Alex’s song-writing roots\, focusing on nylon string guitar and upright bass. Looking at the “filin” movement in Cuba of the forties that fused jazz and trova\, music that influenced his writing style to this day. The album was nominated for both a Latin Grammy for Best Singer-Songwriter and Grammy for Best Latin Pop. \nIn 2019 Alex Cuba embarked on a completely self-produced collection of songs featuring 5 collaborations\, this time with Latin American singer songwriters\, recorded in Gibsons BC with John “Beetle” Bailey and mixed at John’s Drive Shed studio in Ontario. The album received a Latin Grammy Nomination and performance at the televised Award Show in Miami November 2020. \n2021 saw Alex recording at home and adding recording engineer to his credits as musician\, singer-songwriter\, producer. From the healing voice of Grammy Award winning Lila Downs on “Mundo Nuevo”\, to his colourful collaboration with world-renowned flamenco artist\, Antonio Carmona\, and commissioning a 13-piece horn band from his native country of Cuba\, Alex’s vibrant eighth studio album\, Mendó\, is filled with international collaborations. The artwork for the album marks another international project\, created by an artist in Trinidad and Tobago\, Brianna McCarthy\, who caught Cuba’s eye when he noticed her work on the cover of a book and was drawn to “her unique interpretation of the African diaspora”. Mendó took home the 2022 Grammy for best Latin Pop Album April 3! It was Alex Cuba’s 4th nomination and first win\, a tremendous accomplishment for an independent artist. \nHis musical evolution for years was all about searching for the simplicity and soul in Cuban music – taking apart the complex arrangements\, mixing it with North American influences\, adopting the melodic simplicity of pop music\, looking to Cuban folk traditions for inspiration – he’s always exploring\, always creating something fresh and new\, and always\, it seems\, getting it just right. \nCaleb Hart \nNo matter how many changes the music industry experiences\, the one thing that always remains\, is the power of a passionate live show. Caleb Hart has the ability to bring something fresh\, honest and powerful every time he steps on a stage. \nA natural born performer since he was a young boy growing up in Trinidad & Tobago; Hart has been taking his music across Canada and around the world to The Caribbean\, Australia\, USA and New Zealand full time since 2012. Along with racking up over 900 shows in that time\, he has also released 5 records\, 12 singles\, and won prestigious awards from Edmonton Folk Fest\, the Western Canadian Music Awards and more. However\, all of the sales\, stats and awards are just the background to Hart’s mission to spread songs of hope and unity wherever he goes. Whether touring with a band or as a solo performer\, Hart carries a singular ability to bring the audience together for the show and beyond. \nHis debut solo EP album ‘Island Soul’ was released worldwide in June 2017\, and his debut EP with his band The Royal Youths ‘OrigiNation’ was released the following September. He also has numerous singles with his 6th record ‘11’ which was released worldwide on September 11th\, 2019. \nTickets: $37.50 Member\, $42.50 Non-Member (+applicable taxes & fees)

SUMMARY:Moondance: The Van Morrison Songbook
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Tiller’s Folly’s Bruce Coughlan as Van \nMystic Celtic Soul singer and songwriter\, Van Morrison has placed his indelible stamp upon Western Music culture with a career spanning over half a century! \nIn “Van the Man” Mr Coughlan\, Bruce\, brings one of his major influences to life with an uncanny ability to make you shut your eyes and think the great Van is in the room. \nAs well as being an award winning singer and songwriter with groups like Bare Facts\, The Hitops and Tiller’s Folly\, Bruce has long been recognized as one of great vocal interpreters of our time. In this show he puts all of that experience and interpretive skill into sharp focus as “Van The Man”. \nJoining him on this journey is right hand man and many year partner bassist Laurence Knight (Tiller’s Folly\, Foreman Young Band\, Shari Ulrich\, Roy Forbes Long John Baldry). These two have been touring for decades and receiving thunderous ovations from Nashville and The UK to across their Canadian homeland. \nLaurence and Bruce specially picked a stellar cast to bring this show to life featuring some of Vancouver’s most in demand musicians with a few of their more illustrious credits. \nGuitar\, keys and sax is Adam Rohrlick (Michael Buble\, Colin James\, Dr Strangelove); Sax and vocals Karen Graves (Diana Krall\, Temptations\, Long John Baldry); Trumpet\, guitar and vocals Kyle Axeford (Whiskey Dicks\, Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra); Drums and vocals sometime bandmate Greg Stuart (Frank Mills\, Bo Diddley) \nBe prepared to be totally entertained as “Van the Man” brings with the utmost respect\, energy and joy this great icon’s career to life. \nHe emerged in the early 1960’s as vocalist for Irish Blues group Them. Even in the early days\, Van Morrison had a distinctive sound\, and he laid down his uniquely expressive vocal lines with confidence and soulful conviction. So convincingly that songs like Gloria\, Here Comes the Night and Baby\, Please Don’t Go are still staples of Classic Rock & Blues radio stations world-wide! \nAnd then in 1967 came Brown Eyed Girl\, one of\, if not the most iconic sing-along songs of the last century! Although wildly popular and widely considered his signature song\, Brown Eyed Girl hardly begins to define Morrison as an artist. \nOver the next five years\, Van “the Man” would release some of his most ground-breaking and influential work\, combining Celtic inspired imagery with an original blend of Blues\, Jazz\, Folk and Soul Music styles. \nIn 1970\, Van Morrison recorded two albums: Moondance & Van Morrison\, His Band and the Street Choir. From these two albums alone flowed a stream of enduring classics: And It Stoned Me\, Moondance\, Crazy Love\, Caravan\, Into the Mystic\, Blue Money\, Domino & I’ve Been Working. \nIn the half-century to pass since\, Van Morrison has continued to write\, perform and produce his distinct brand of Rhythm & Blues. \nVocalist Bruce Coughlan (Tiller’s Folly) fronts this six-piece music revue performing our picks of Van Morrison’s most lively\, engaging and best loved songs! \nIncluded in the revue are Bruce’s Tiller’s Folly bandmate Laurence Knight (Bass and Vocals) and a great cast featuring Adam Rohrlick (Keys\, Guitar and sax)\, Karen Graves (Sax and Vocals)\, Greg Stuart (Drums and Vocals) and Kyle Axford (Trumpet\, Guitar and Vocals). \nTickets: $52 Admission (includes GST\, +applicable fees)
