SUMMARY:taqəš and Other Works featuring Ballet Kelowna
DESCRIPTION:The taqəš and Other Works program features a stunning lineup of signature works from Ballet Kelowna’s contemporary ballet repertoire. With Cameron Fraser-Monroe’s powerful and compelling taqəš [tawKESH]\, Guillaume Côté’s mesmerizing Bolero\, and Alysa Pires’ vivacious audience favourite MAMBO\, this high-energy program promises to please a wide range of spectators. \nCameron Fraser-Monroe brings his classical ballet training\, knowledge of traditional Coast Salish\, Grass\, and Hoop Dance\, and experience as a contemporary dancer to taqəš [tawKESH]\, which means “to return something” in Ayajuthem\, the language belonging to the Homalco\, Klahoose\, K’omoks and Tla’amin Nations. Set to several songs by Polaris Prize-winning composer and singer Jeremy Dutcher\, taqəš follows the traditional story “Raven Returns the Water\,” centred around ῤoho (raven) and walθ (frog). \nNext\, National Ballet of Canada Choreographic Associate Guillaume Côté brings strength and fragility to a fascinating interpretation of the beloved Bolero by Maurice Ravel\, one of music’s most famous and identifiable melodies. A “riveting tour de force” (Dance Magazine)\, Bolero (2012) features breathtaking lifts and virtuosic choreography. \nRounding out the program\, audiences will be treated to Ballet Kelowna commissioned MAMBO (2018) by Alysa Pires. The work gained worldwide acclaim after performances at Beijing’s China International Performing Arts Expo and Toronto’s Fall for Dance North Festival in 2018. Pires’ “crowd-pleasing MAMBO” (The Globe and Mail) is a colourful joie de vivre set to a vibrant soundtrack of Latin\, swing\, and jazz standards by musical legends such as Dean Martin\, Perry Como\, Rosemary Clooney\, Sarah Vaughn\, and more. \nMore info please visit: www.bcmovementarts.com \nTickets: $34.50 Adult\, $32.50 Senior\, $30.50 Student\, $28.50 Group 10+* (+applicable tax & fees) \n*Available through the Box Office only

SUMMARY:The Legacy of Lightfoot
DESCRIPTION:The Legacy of Lightfoot was born out of an enduring respect and reverence for the iconic music of Gordon Lightfoot.  Take a journey through one of the deepest and most prolific catalogues of songs ever written. Not only was Gordon Lightfoot one of the most skilled songwriters of his generation\, but he had the voice and charisma to match. The musicians who have come together to celebrate The Legacy of Lightfoot combine their decades of experience as performers and songwriters to give a meaningful and engaging performance of his enduring catalogue of music. From his days playing the coffee houses in the 1960’s to the mega hits of the 70’s and all the way up to the beautiful music written in his later years\, The Legacy of Lightfoot shines a light on the entirety of Gordon’s masterful career. \nOliver Swain & Dylan Stone are two of British Columbia’s greatly accomplished and experienced songwriters & performers. Following the graceful passing of Gordon Lightfoot in May 2023 musicians Swain & Stone surrounded themselves with a talented cast of supporting musicians and collaborated to organize a concert to celebrate Gordon’s life and music. They found an over whelming response to their show and formed The Legacy Of Lightfoot. Together they share numerous accolades including award wins and nominations at the Juno’s\, Western Canadian Music Awards and Canadian Folk Music Awards. What started as a humble celebration of Lightfoot’s music has now been elevated to a theatre production that is connecting to large audiences and giving the spirit and legacy of Lightfoot’s music a new life & longevity. \n“You will go with me everywhere. When I’m dreaming\, you still share my lonely nights” – Gordon Lightfoot \nTickets: $42 Admission (+applicable taxes & fees)

SUMMARY:CRFF North of Normal
DESCRIPTION:Based on Cea Sunrise Person’s 2014 memoir\, North of Normal depicts Cea’s unusual childhood in the wilderness and her attempts to adapt to modern city life with her counterculture mother. \nIn the 1970s\, Cea’s hippie grandparents (Robert Carlyle and Janet Porter) flee the United States for the wilderness of Alberta and British Columbia\, with baby Cea and her teenage mother in tow. Living out of a tipi\, Cea’s first years are spent among adults who’ve rejected traditional conventions and expectations — she routinely witnesses to their copious pot smoking and indiscrete sexual encounters. With no alternative reference\, Cea’s childhood feels normal\, natural\, and maybe even idyllic. That’s until her mother Michelle (Sarah Gadon) tires of her father’s criticism and decides to remove herself and Cea from the community to be a “real” family with her boyfriend Karl. \nAs time flashes forward\, a teenage Cea reunites with her mother after what seems like several years — it is evident that their attempt at a new life went awry due to a lack of stability and Michelle’s chaotic\, sometimes dangerous romantic dramas. Both tender and dark\, honest and idealistic\, North of Normal beautifully captures the joys and warmth\, as well as the devastating failings\, of an extraordinary family dynamic — a family bound by genuine love and affection\, but challenged by ideology\, selfishness\, insecurity\, and baked-in psychological damage. \n“Carlyle’s very good — direct\, unsentimental\, and graceful — in a role quite unlike anything he’s done before. Gadon\, soulful and natural as ever\, plays her character’s flaws and humanity in equal proportion.” \n-Jason Bailey\, The Playlist \nEnglish \nNot Rated \nTickets: $15 Admission (+applicable taxes and fees)

SUMMARY:Women in Blues
DESCRIPTION:The Tidemark Theatre Society is proud to present Women in Blues\, featuring Jenie Thai and Miss Emily! \nJenie Thai \nTwo-time Maple Blues Award nominee\, Jenie Thai is a songwriter and pianist with an old-school soul and boogie-woogie style. Inspired by America’s great songwriters\, she blends her love of classic R&B with a contemporary edge in tough but tender ballads and fiery house-rockers. \nIn 2019\, Jenie supported The Legendary Downchild Blues Band’s 50thAnniversary Tour\, including their SOLD OUT show at the National Arts Centre\, where she performed alongside Dan Aykroyd\, Tony D (MonkeyJunk) and Suzie Vinnick\, to fantastic response from the audience for her lights out piano playing and sing on Downchild’s “Trying To Keep Her ‘88’s Straight”. \nJenie has performed at numerous festivals\, including Montreal Jazz Festival\, Edmonton Folk Festival\, Mariposa\, Toronto Jazz Festival\, and the Salmon Arm Roots & Blues Festival to name a few. Check out one of Canada’s exciting\, young up and coming talents with her original material from her latest album “Night On Fire. \nMiss Emily \nIn February of 2020 at the Maple Blues Awards in Toronto\, Miss Emily walked away with Female Vocalist of the Year\, New Artist of the Year and the Sapphire Canadian Blues Music Video Award. This national recognition hearkened back to her early days of county fair singing competitions. In 1993 a then 12 year- old Emily Fennell was winning accolades not by emulating Whitney Houston or Celine Dion like her peers but by channeling Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin; belting out song choices that belied her age. Those traditional influences would be the foundation of a career characterized by fearless honesty and a constant connection to the roots of popular music. \nAlong the way\, she acquired an unparalleled work ethic by playing night after night in bars along Ontario’s 401 corridor while refining her songwriting and gaining a loyal following. Miss Emily has captivated fans across Canada\, the US\, the UK and Western Europe with her unique combination of impassioned performances and incomparable vocals that soar to emotional heights and span the genres from soul and classic Motown\, to jazz\, gospel and blues. Despite two decades of electrifying audiences in ten different countries\, Miss Emily is just beginning to flourish. \nTickets: $47.50 Members\, $52.50 Non-Members (+applicable taxes & fees)

DESCRIPTION:Jeremy Dutcher is a Two-Spirit song carrier\, composer\, activist\, ethnomusicologist and classically-trained vocalist from New Brunswick\, Canada who currently lives in Montréal\, Québec. A Wolastoqiyik member of the Tobique First Nation in North-West New Brunswick\, Jeremy is best known for his debut album\, Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa (The Songs of the People of the Beautiful River)\, recorded following a research project on archival recordings of traditional Wolastoqiyik songs at the Canadian Museum of History. Jeremy transcribed songs sung by his ancestors in 1907 and recorded onto wax cylinders\, transforming them into “collaborative” compositions. The album earned him the 2018 Polaris Music Prize and Indigenous Music Album of the Year at the 2019 JUNO Awards. His 2019 NPR Tiny Desk Concert has over 85\,000 views. \nJeremy studied music and anthropology at Dalhousie University in Halifax\, Nova Scotia. SUMMARY:CRFF Little Richard: I am Everything
DESCRIPTION:What would rock ’n’ roll be without Little Richard? From the Rolling Stones to the Beatles to David Bowie\, popular music has been shaped by trailblazer Little Richard and his larger-than-life personality. Yet few people know the true story behind one of music’s most influential figures. Lisa Cortés’ raucous doc delves into Little Richard’s queer and Black identities\, ingenious music making\, and late-life religiosity. \nRichard Penniman\, better known by his stage name Little Richard\, contained multitudes. He was Black and proud in a time when white musicians like Elvis and Mick Jagger got credit for pop music’s evolution. He was outwardly queer\, yet denounced this later in life after inner turmoil. Little Richard was truly everything at once\, unable to define or put into a box. Cortés deftly weaves together various perspectives from Black\, queer\, and music scholars\, as well as musicians of the time like Mick Jagger and Tom Jones\, to reveal the dimensions of Penniman’s life that audiences have not seen before. \nLittle Richard: I Am Everything was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize – Documentary at Sundance 2022\, as well as for the Audience Award at SXSW 2022. This doc will leave audiences buzzing with its rockin’ soundtrack and shocking details of Little Richard’s life. \n“Little Richard: I Am Everything\, directed with supreme love and insight by Lisa Cortés\, is the enthralling documentary that Little Richard deserves. It’s a movie that understands\, from the inside out\, what a great and transgressive artist he was\, how his starburst brilliance shifted the whole energy of the culture — but also how the astonishing radical nature of what he did\, from almost the moment it happened\, got shoved under the rug of the official narrative of rock ‘n’ roll.” -Variety \nEnglish \nNot Rated \nTickets: $15 Admission (+applicable taxes and fees)
