SUMMARY:Family Literacy Day: Morgan Toney
DESCRIPTION:In support of Family Literacy Week\, the Tidemark Theatre and Campbell River Literacy Association presents Morgan Toney! \nMusic is an almost alchemical force to Canadian Mi’kmaq fiddler and singer Morgan Toney. In just a short amount of time\, Toney has invigorated both the Atlantic music communities and Mi’kmaq communities by bringing together the fiery fiddling of Cape Breton Island with the old songs of the Mi’kmaq\, some dating back up to 500 years. He calls this fusion Mi’kmaltic (Mi’kmaq + Celtic) and it’s his way of celebrating his language and heritage. “There are two worlds of Mi’kmaq music\,” Toney explains\, “song and fiddle. They had never come together before. People knew of each\, but never had I ever seen a collaboration between Celtic and Mi’kmaq culture before. \nToney’s debut album First Flight\, nominated for 3 East Coast Music Awards and a Canadian Folk Music Award\, showcases this unique combination\, both in the way he transforms traditional songs like the Ko’jua and the Mi’kmaq Honour Song\, but also for the new songs he’s creating. “Msit No’kmaq” was written partially in Mi’kmaq and features a fiddle break from the great Cape Breton fiddler Ashley MacIsaac. “Kwana Li” is a traditional Mi’kmaq song that Toney added new English lyrics to and “For the Elders” is a newly composed waltz from Toney. \nWith the immediate accolades and attention\, it’s easy to forget that Morgan Toney is so new to the music\, having only played the fiddle for a few years. But there’s something deeper at work here. His great-grandfather and three other great-uncles were all Mi’kmaq fiddlers of renown in the community. In a sense\, Toney’s coming back full circle. And circles are something he understands. “We are living in circles\,” he says. “The earth is a circle. The drum is a circle\, how we move around is a circle\, how we greet each other. The talking circle is huge.” \nThis performance is made possible in part by Theatre Angels donations. Please consider making a donation to the Theatre Angels program. \nTickets are free of charge\, we ask that you reserve your tickets in advance. \nIn person tickets are first come\, first served. Limit 4 tickets per household. Please contact the box office if you require wheelchair seating. \nLive stream tickets will be available to view for 48 hours. \nIf your tickets are not scanned in 15 minutes before the performance\, we will release your tickets to other patrons. If you were not able to get tickets ahead of time\, please come check at the Box Office on Family Literacy Day! \nEvery body that goes into the auditorium MUST have a ticket\, including infants.

SUMMARY:Art Reception: Human Nature
DESCRIPTION:Human Nature\nAn Exhibition Full of Life and Wonder\nBy Local Artist Alyssa Penner \nThe most positive childhood memories I have is growing up within the rugged and beautiful natural landscapes of Vancouver Island. That combined with a creative mind served me well in imagining our area as the most magical place. From the time I was brought into this world\, I saw nature and my surroundings though my own mind\, and that both fascinates me and inspires me. \nFour generations of my family reside all over the island\, and growing up I had the opportunity to get to know a few of the areas on the island very well. I was mostly in Crofton a small seaside community\, Coomse known for its goats on the roof market\, and Campbell River where I have settled down with my husband and two children. (PS – I love it here) Now living and working in this community for the past 10 years\, I have met so many wonderful people and can not wait to meet more. \nI could describe how I have always been driven to create and make a career out of my art\, but that’s not what this show is about. Its not about me\, its about all of us and the unique connections we have to nature and the spaces surrounding us. I create art first and foremost for my own personal expression and needs. But also\, by doing that I seem to express how we all see the world though an untainted\, magical and childhood like view. To achieve this\, I like to try and turn the landscape into a painting that represents how it makes me feel. I use colour to create both a joyful and calming presence. I play with movement\, light and shadow. By working in this intuitive way\, I create an experience that might spark a bit of wonder in your mind. \nIt’s important for me to share my art with the world\, because in my opinion\, the story and narrative of my artwork does not end with me. It continues through the eyes and mind of other fellow humans. \nYou can find out more about me and my artwork on my website alyssapennerartwork.com

SUMMARY:CRFF Who's Yer Father?
DESCRIPTION:Who’s Yer Father? is a delightful Canadian crime-comedy with a charming East Coast twist. Directed by Prince Edward Islander Jeremy Larter\, this quirky caper is set against the picturesque backdrop of the island’s sandy shores and tight-knit community. \nLarry Constable (Chris Locke) is a down-and-out private investigator. In fact\, he’s PEI’s only P.I.\, though his enthusiasm far outweighs his investigative prowess. When Luke Thorne\, a wealthy seafood tycoon\, needs help investigating suspicious black-market lobster sales on the other side of the island\, he naturally turns to Larry. Plucky but hapless\, Larry dives headfirst into the case and finds himself immersed in the scenic rural community of Sandbar Cove. There\, he meets Rhonda\, a local convenience store clerk (Susan Kent\, This Hour Has 22 Minutes) who quickly takes to helping him solve his case. When Larry and Rhonda discover a secret about Thorne’s wife\, they hatch a plan to blackmail her and escape to start a new life together\, but you know what they say about the best laid plans! \nAn oddball love letter to the East Coast\, Who’s Yer Father? masterfully captures the essence of Maritime life\, blending genres of humour\, crime\, and romance. Even the title is a nod to a local colloquialism; “who’s yer father” is a shorthand way for islanders to figure out if they know each other. And in a province of 170\,000 people\, chances are they do! Larter’s film is a heartwarming and entertaining addition to the Canadian cinema canon. \nEnglish \nNot Rated \nContent advisory: coarse language \nTickets: $15 Admission (+applicable taxes & fees)
