SUMMARY:CRFF Monster
DESCRIPTION:After a detour in France (The Truth\, TIFF ’19) and South Korea (Broker\, TIFF ’22)\, Kore-eda Hirokazu returns to his homeland to reconnect with the roots that nourished the deepest spirit of his cinema. His art thrives on subtle\, delicate emotions\, disregards the obvious\, and explores the ordinariness and variables of the human experience. \nQuiet and reserved Minato (Soya Kurokawa) — no longer a kid\, but not yet an adolescent — lost his father when he was a young child and lives with his mother (Sakura Ando). When he starts behaving strangely\, obsessed with the idea his brain has been switched with a pig’s\, his mother suspects his teacher Hori (Eita Nagayama) and calls a meeting with the school principal (Tanaka Yuko) only to face a wall of silence and stiff apologies. Someone must have put that idea in Minato’s head\, but something doesn’t add up. Is Minato telling the truth\, or ishis professor innocent? Looking at the story from various points of view\, in a Rashomon-inspired structure\, reality changes and the actual subject becomes the hidden friendship between Minato and one of his schoolmates\, often bullied by other kids. \nA great storyteller of family dynamics\, Kore-eda shows once again his unique ability to depict the inner world of children\, unveiling uncomfortable realities with a natural and necessary tenderness. A milestone in his impressive body of work\, Monster is marked by two major collaborations: one with co-screenwriter Sakamoto Yûji; and the other with the legendary musician Ryuichi Sakamoto\, who died last March\, Monster being his last soundtrack. \nJapanese \nRated PG-13 \nTickets: $15 Admission (+applicable taxes & fees)

SUMMARY:Anne of Green Gables - The Ballet
DESCRIPTION:Anne of Green Gables – The Ballet™ is a playful\, colourful and evocative production that will transport audiences to early 20th century Atlantic Canada. Based on the beloved Canadian novel by Lucy Maud Montgomery\, Anne of Green Gables – The Ballet™ follows the adventures of Anne Shirley\, an orphan girl sent to live on a farm in the fictional town of Avonlea\, Prince Edward Island. \nAnne of Green Gables is a 1908 novel by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery (published as L. M. Montgomery). Written for all ages\, it has been considered a children’s novel since the mid-twentieth century. It recounts the adventures of Anne Shirley\, an 11-year-old orphan girl who is mistakenly sent to Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert\, a middle-aged brother and sister who had intended to adopt a boy to help them on their farm in the fictional town of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island. The novel recounts how Anne makes her way with the Cuthberts\, in school\, and within the town. \nAnne Shirley\, a young orphan from the fictional community of Bolingbroke\, Nova Scotia (based upon the real community of New London\, Prince Edward Island)\, is sent to live with Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert\, siblings in their fifties and sixties\, after a childhood spent in strangers’ homes and orphanages. Marilla and Matthew had originally decided to adopt a boy from the orphanage to help Matthew run their farm at Green Gables\, which is set in the fictional town of Avonlea. Through a misunderstanding\, the orphanage sends Anne instead. \nAnne is highly imaginative\, eager to please and\, at times\, quite a dramatic individual. However\, she is defensive about her appearance\, despising her red hair and pale\, thin frame. She is often quite talkative\, especially when it comes to describing her fantasies and dreams. At first\, stern and sharp Marilla says Anne must return to the orphanage\, but after much observation and considering\, along with Matthew’s strong liking to Anne\, she decides to let her stay. \nAs a child of imagination\, Anne takes much joy in life and adapts quickly\, thriving in the close-knit farming village. Her imagination and talkativeness soon brighten up Green Gables. \nCanada’s Ballet Jörgen is Canada’s fifth largest ballet company and the nation’s only major ballet company with a repertoire consisting exclusively of original works. It was founded in 1987 by Susan Bodie and Bengt Jörgen and is based in Toronto\, Ontario. The company also has hubs in Ottawa\, Hamilton\, Kitchener-Waterloo\, and Halifax. Many of Canada’s Ballet Jörgen ballets have earned national and international recognition propelling the company to the forefront of the North American dance scene. \nTickets: $62.50 Non-Member Adult\, $57.50 Member Adult\, $42.50 Senior/Student 17 & under (+applicable taxes & fees) \nAnne of Green Gables – The Ballet® is based on Anne of Green Gables – The Musical™. Music composed by Norman Campbell. Anne of Green Gables – The Ballet® is made possible with the assistance of the heirs of L.M. Montgomery and in partnership with the heirs of Norman Campbell and Don Harron. SUMMARY:Allison Russell
DESCRIPTION:Born in Montreal\, Allison Russell — 4-time Grammy-nominated poet\, singer\, songwriter\, multi-instrumentalist\, activist and co-founder of Our Native Daughters (with Rhiannon Giddens\, Leyla McCalla and Amythyst Kiah) and Birds of Chicago (with JT Nero) — is a multi-faceted tour de force. \nIn her critically acclaimed debut album Outside Child\, she unpacks her youth through stories of deliverance and redemption\, detailing the places\, people\, and realizations that helped her survive and claim her freedom. \nHailed as one of 2021’s best albums by a broad cross-section of the nation’s critics\, the album continues to garner accolades and awards from many of music’s most prestigious outlets. “It’s an album of strength and affirmation\, not victimization\,” said The New York Times in their profile on Russell\, ranking Outside Child #2 on their list of the Best Albums of 2021. \nOutside Child received three Grammy award nominations in the Best Americana Album\, Best American Roots Performance\, and Best American Roots Song categories. In addition\, Russell was awarded Album of the Year at the 2022 Americana Music Association Awards\, four Canadian Folk Music Awards\, the Polaris Music Prize\, and two Juno Awards. Russell is the first Black artist to ever win a Contemporary Roots Album of the Year in Juno history. In 2023 she was nominated for an additional GRAMMY Award for her collaboration with Aoife O’Donovan. \nAlongside the Rainbow Coalition Band – a talented ensemble of BIack and POC\, queer\, and historically marginalized musicians from across the U.S. – Russell uses the power of music in order to spread her message of the “Beloved Community” and is dedicated to lifting others upwards as her own star climbs higher. \nIn her own words: “We are more than the sum of our scars. We are the dust of the stars\, the bones of the Earth\, the breath of the void\, the expanse of our imaginations\, the arc of art\, the love in our hearts. We lift each other up. We are the “Beloved Community” every time we choose to be. None above\, none below\, all are equal under the listening sky.” \nRussell is slated to release new music later this year and an autobiographical memoir in 2024. \nSpecial Guest: Aysanabee \nAysanabee\, whose solemn and soaring vocals earned him his place as the first signee to Ishkode Records\, the first Indigenous and women-owned labels in the country\, was nominated for a 2023 Juno for his debut album\, Watin\, released on Nov. 4\, 2022. \nHis hit single Nomads reached #1 on Alternative Radio\, making him the first Indigenous artist ever to reach #1 on any media base chart. \nIn a whirlwind year\, Aysanabee performed well over 100 shows across the country and around the world\, but made his mark performing at the 2023 Juno Awards national broadcast featuring Grammy-nominated drum group Northern Cree\, news agencies called it ‘the most moving performance’ of this year’s award ceremony. \nAysanabee is actively touring and playing festivals across Canada and Europe in 2023\, and is set to release a follow-up EP in the fall. \nTickets: $39.50 Members\, $44.50 Non-Members (+applicable taxes & fees)
