SUMMARY:Pharis & Jason Romero
DESCRIPTION:Pharis and Jason Romero are pure craftspeople and top-notch musicians. They’ve won four Juno awards and seven Canadian Folk Music Awards\, connecting with audiences through their music\, lifestyle\, and the sense of joy and ease that comes from this small-town renaissance couple. They live in the wilderness town of Horsefly\, British Columbia where they write songs\, learn old music\, and work as renowned banjo builders J. Romero Banjos. \nTheir newest record Tell ‘Em You Were Gold was released on venerable folk label Smithsonian Folkways Recordings in June 2022. Made in an old barn Pharis & Jason spent years slowly restoring\, and recorded in six days by a wood stove under northern lights\, it’s a testament to the musical value and significance of their work. It’s built around the beauty of their banjos and the pair’s deep psychic and artistic connection\, with conviction and delicacy – and stunning singing. They play their own songs with the traditional music they have always sung\, weaving guests John Reischman\, Grace Forrest\, Trent Freeman\, Patrick Metzger and Marc Jenkins on mandolin\, fiddle\, bass and pedal steel between the duo and solo pieces. Their songs seem to come from easy and forthright places about traveling and rural life\, but in their openness the songs are deeply moving and give the listener space for a unique and personal experience. There’s time to become absorbed in Jason’s solo banjo meditations\, to move with the deep pulse of their guitar playing\, to reflect on life’s beauty and knottiness\, and to let the songs lift you into a state of well-being. They frequently bring out a desire to play banjo\, to sing with another person\, and to dig up the oldest\, scratchiest record you can find and write a song just like it. \nTickets: $32.50 Members\, $37.50 Non-Members (+applicable taxes & fees)

SUMMARY:Murray McLaughlan ...Hourglass
DESCRIPTION:Murray McLauchlan is one of Canada’s most highly regarded singer/songwriters\, and with good cause. Over a 50-year career\, he has released 20 albums and been awarded 11 Junos. His songs Farmer’s Song\, Down by the Henry Moore\, Whispering Rain and Sweeping the Spotlight Away are now considered Canadian standards. Murray is also a painter\, an author\, an actor\, a radio host; he’s been bestowed an Honourary Doctor of Laws and appointed to The Order of Canada. That’s quite a ride. For many years Murray’s touring had been restricted to Lunch At Allen’s\, whose members also include Ian Thomas\, Marc Jordan and Cindy Church. But with the release  of his critically acclaimed  Hourglass\, he’s back on the road treating concert goers to a seamless blend of old and new. \nHere’s what he has to say: “As a songwriter I know that it’s not enough to sit in your kitchen and write. Your songs need to be heard. Music is a communicative art and if it isn’t brought in front of people there is no way to tell if that end has been met. I like to think of a concert tour as a kind of roving gallery to test your art and your ideas. I try to do my very best to make it worthwhile for folks to be there and to perhaps look at things in a new way when they leave.” \nAnd this\, in a nutshell\, is the Murray McLauchlan concert experience. \n“It might have been a large theatre but it felt like a group of friends sitting in a living room listening to tales from the son who hit the road to share his music … special\, memorable\, warm and\, quite simply\, Murray McLauchlan at his best.”  – Kamloops This Week \nTickets: $67.50 Admission (includes GST\, +applicable fees) \n \nFor more info visit www.shantero.com or www.murraymclauchlan.com

SUMMARY:Tchaikovsky: From Dark to Light
DESCRIPTION:The Strathcona Symphony Orchestra’s (SSO) From Dark to Light! program features two of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s iconic works\, Symphony No. 5 in E Minor\, and one of the most difficult violin pieces in history\, Violin Concerto in D Major\, with Canadian-born soloist\, Gregory Lewis. \nA Canada Council for the Arts recipient\, Gregory won the right to play a 1768 Gagliano violin for three years and he will be the SSO’s guest soloist for the challenging violin piece. \nGregory grew up in Thunder Bay and left at the age of sixteen to pursue his musical education and a bachelor’s degree in Winnipeg before relocating to the U.S. to get a master’s degree at Yale University.  He is now pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree while simultaneously playing in Yale’s award-winning Quartet in Residence\, the Callisto Quartet. The Callisto Quartet maintains a busy international touring schedule\, appearing at notable venues including Carnegie Hall\, the Kennedy Center\, and the Ravinia Festival. \nGregory’s connection with SSO Music Director and solo cellist\, Helena Jung\, dates to 2017 when he first performed on Vancouver Island with Campbell River-born pianist\, Carter Johnson.  Carter introduced Gregory to Helena\, and the three musicians toured Vancouver Island in 2018 and 2019.  Helena contacted Gregory in early 2023 with the idea of performing Tchaikovsky’s violin concerto with the SSO and Gregory enthusiastically agreed to the request. \nThe concert’s title\, From Dark to Light! refers to the emotional trajectory of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 and Violin Concerto\, taking the listener on a journey through a range of emotions\, from darker\, more turbulent passages to moments of light\, hope\, and resolution. \nHelena Jung\, said\, “I want the audience to feel how Tchaikovsky explores struggle\, despair\, and eventually triumph in Symphony No. 5\, mirroring his inner turmoil.” \n“In these times of political uncertainty\, social unrest\, and environmental challenges\, I hope the theme of moving from darkness to light helps our listeners find inspiration and resilience\,” she said. \nClassical music has also served as the inspiration for modern pop music to ballads\, including Frank Sinatra’s Moon Love which was adapted from Tchaikovsky’s 2nd movement in Symphony No. 5. \nPlease visit www.strathconasymphony.ca for more information or the SSO’s Facebook page. \n$25 Adult\, $15 Child 12 & Under (includes GST\, +applicable fees)
