SUMMARY:Laughing Matters (RiverCity Stage)
DESCRIPTION:Due to recent weather conditions\, the performance of Laughing Matters scheduled for Saturday\, February 11th has been postponed to Saturday\, March 11th. We apologize for the inconvenience. \nLaughing Matters\nA Play About Surviving Cancer With Humor Intact \nIn this play we are invited into the inner world and the indomitable spirit of Kymme\, whose personal courage is fueled by her most powerful and endearing asset\, that being her ability to see through the surface of serious circumstances to reveal with humor such truths about the human condition that inspire hope and serenity\, and an unyielding faith in one’s ability to overcome both those obstacles in the world around us as well as those innermost fears that would otherwise block our confidence in forging ahead on our life’s journey. \nKymme’s story is both an intensely personal journey and a public document as it was thoroughly reported in local media. This single mother\, teacher\, actor\, writer and owner of TheatreWorks Center for the Performing Arts in the Comox Valley for over two decades found herself on an unwanted\, three-year detour from the highway of her life. She was lifted up by a caring community who rallied her spirits. Her “trunks-up attitude” has been inspirational and is another way for her to share her experience through her creativity. \nHer story is a dramatic one\, told in her inimitable style with a humorous twist. “Laughter\, support and a vision. These are not expensive medicines\, these are not invasive toxins. Yet these three simple things got me through this ordeal.” The play called Laughing Matters is informative\, insightful and courageous\, its passionate message powerfully charged with determination and hope.  \nReviews \n“This play was an emotional journey from crying to laughter. I related with the character as a hygienist who has treated cancer patients\, and as a patient who has been through some of these same situations and emotions.”                                        \n“The writing and the acting are outstanding. It really is a Must See”              \n“This may be one of the few presentations that can have a real effect about changing the attitudes of hygienists who are NOT doing Oral Cancer Screenings–in particular the extra-oral exam.” \n “EVERYBODY should see this play!” \n “…poignant\, memorable and informative–a must see for all dental health professionals“    Monica Bacica\,  President Comox Valley Dental Hygiene Society \nTickets: $20 (+applicable taxes and fees)

SUMMARY:BUZZ Salutes Gershwin (Quadra Community Centre)
DESCRIPTION:BUZZ\, the brass quintet from Quebec\, offers an impressive range of musical styles\, from the Renaissance to the present day. Its playlist includes classics from the brass-quintet repertoire and\, to spice things up\, exclusive compositions and arrangements. \nSince its founding by Sylvain Lapointe in 2002\, Buzz has toured in China\, Europe\, the United States and from coast to coast in Canada. This ensemble is a true musical phenomenon with an exceptional chamber music repertoire\, ranging from classical to jazz to folk music. \nIn “Buzz Salutes Gershwin”\, the merry band\, including Sylvain Lapointe and Frédéric Gagnon\, trumpets; Pascal Lafrenière\, horn; and Jason De Carufel and Sylvain Arseneau\, trombones — teams up with Matt Herskowitz\, pianist extraordinaire\, to present the timeless works of George Gershwin. Six instruments pay homage to this most celebrated of American composers\, evoking all the brilliance and intensity of a symphony orchestra. \nWith several musical awards in their pockets\, including the 2015 Opus Concert of the Year\, these five friends know how to surprise\, dazzle and seduce all audiences with their diverse musical influences\, and the quality of their performances. \nTickets: $17 advance\, $20 at the door (+applicable taxes and fees)
