SUMMARY:The Rolston String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:The Rolston String Quartet – Luri Lee (violin)\, Hezekiah Leung (viola)\, Jonathan Lo (cello)\, and new member as of spring 2018 Emily Kruspe (violin) – was formed in the summer of 2013 at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity’s Chamber Music Residency. They take their name from Canadian violinist Thomas Rolston\, founder and long-time director of the Music and Sound Programs at the Banff Centre. \nThe 2018 recipient and first international ensemble chosen for the prestigious Cleveland Quartet Award from Chamber Music America\, Canada’s Rolston String Quartet continue to receive acclamation and recognition for their musical excellence. In 2016\, a monumental year\, they earned First Prize at the 12th Banff International String Quartet Competition (BISQC). In that same year\, the quartet’s winning included Astral’s National Auditions and Grand Prize of the 31st Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition. They were also prizewinners at the 2016 Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition and the inaugural M-Prize competition. There is no wonder they were named among CBC Radio’s “30 Hot Canadian Classical Musicians Under 30” in 2016. \nOn the heels of their Banff win\, Rolston String Quartet immediately embarked upon the BISQC Winner’s Tour\, taking them to Germany\, Italy\, Austria\, Canada\, and United States. As Ludwig van Toronto states\, “they performed with a maturity and cohesion rivaling the best string quartets in the world.” In the 2017-18 season\, they tipped the 100-concert milestone with performances throughout Canada\, United States\, Germany\, Brussels\, Italy\, and Israel. Rolston String Quartet began their two-year term as the Yale School of Music’s fellowship quartet-in-residence in the fall of 2017. They have also served as the graduate quartet-in-residence at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music and have participated in residencies and fellowships at the Académie musicale de Villecroze\, Aspen Music Festival\, Banff Centre\, McGill International String Quartet Academy\, Norfolk Chamber Music Festival\, Robert Mann String Quartet Institute\, St. Lawrence String Quartet Seminar\, and the Yehudi Menuhin Chamber Music Festival. \nTickets: $17 Advance\, $20 At the Door\, Free for Students 16 & under (+applicable fees)

SUMMARY:Lonesome Ace Stringband
DESCRIPTION:Highway 19 presents The Lonesome Ace Stringband\, an old-time band with bluegrass chops that play some righteous folk and country music. Consisting of just fiddle\, clawhammer banjo\, and upright bass\, the band moves freely between having a sound so powerful that it doesn’t seem like it should be coming from a trio\, to a sparseness and fragility that draws the listener in and refreshes the ear. There’s a depth of groove and sense of space not often heard in bluegrass today\, a level of instrumental interplay and vocal blend uncommon in old-time\, and an on-stage rapport that transcends all of this. \nThree Canadians lost in the weird and wonderful traditional country music of the American South: Chris Coole (banjo)\, John Showman (fiddle) and Max Heineman (bass) are each among Canada’s finest players of acoustic music. All three are compelling lead singers\, each with his own character and range. This allows for the vocal texture to shift depending on how the song needs to feel – and what the song has to say. When those voices come together the power of the harmonies is unshakable. \nThe trio spent 7 years as a house band at Toronto’s legendary Dakota Tavern before ever taking the show on the road or recording a note. Those years were a gestation period that allowed for a type of looseness and intuition to develop\, something that can only come from experienced musicians clocking hundreds of on-stage hours together. \nIn the last few years the band has toured internationally\, playing some of the largest festivals in North America (Merlefest\, Winnipeg Folk Festival\, Rockygrass)\, and recorded 3 albums. The first two\, Old Time (2014)\, and Gone For Evermore (2016) leaned heavily on the traditional old-time cannon. 2018’s When the Sun Comes Up showcases the band’s songwriting and studio savvy\, offering up a more progressive interpretation of old-time music\, and taking it’s sound to new places. Material from all three and more will be on the menu for what is sure to be a memorable night at Rivercity Stage. \nTickets: $23 (+applicable fees)
