SUMMARY:Musica Intima
DESCRIPTION:Internationally renowned for their engaging stage presence\, impeccable musicianship and new perspectives on ensemble singing\, musica intima has earned a reputation as one of Canada’s most unique vocal ensembles. A shared leadership model allows the singers to exchange ideas freely while exploring their own musical creativity\, and this freedom leads to dynamic performances where the ensemble engages with the audience directly and spontaneously. \nOver the past almost thirty years\, musica intima has commissioned twenty new works from Canadian composers and has championed contemporary Canadian vocal repertoire around the country and across the world. musica intima has released ten commercial recordings\, received two JUNO nominations\, and one Western Canadian Music Award. The most recent recordings are “thirst” (2015) which was released on the composer- and artist-run Redshift label\, and the independent release of the seasonal EP ‘Songs for a Winter’s Night’ (2018). \nRecent and upcoming highlights have included a tour to the Busan Choral Festival in Korea (2016)\, the Chan Centre-presented collaboration with international superstar vocalist Bobby McFerrin (2019)\, and a digital collaboration with a rising star of the Musical Theatre world\, spoken word artist and activist Germaine Konji (2021). The 21/22 season holds exciting collaborations with Indigenous choreographer Olivia C. SUMMARY:Suzie Ungerleider
DESCRIPTION:Born in northeastern US and raised in western Canada\, Suzie Ungerleider began performing under the name Oh Susanna in the mid-1990s\, winning instant praise for striking voice and poetic songcraft. Suzie had been quietly working as a clerk at a Vancouver library when in 1996 she self-released a cassette tape of seven songs recorded for just $200\, and found herself besieged by music industry executives and agents after performing a tiny set at a local club. For over two decades\, thousands of shows\, and ten critically acclaimed albums\, Suzie’s gloriously emotive\, crystalline voice\, her bewitching performances and her fierce song-writing have consistently captivated audiences\, her peers and the press. She is the recipient of a Genie Award for Best Original Song and a Canadian Folk Music Award for English Songwriter of the Year. She has also been nominated for two Juno Awards each for Best Roots and Traditional Album of the Year\, as well as four Canadian Folk Music Awards for Best Solo Performer\, Best Contemporary Singer\, and English Songwriter of the Year.
