SUMMARY:Raine Hamilton String Trio
DESCRIPTION:Raine is part prairie songstress\, part storyweaver. Each song has a story\, delivered between songs with humour and grace. Raine invites the love of the violin into the singer-songwriter genre\, writing for violin and voice\, as well as for guitar and voice. Joined by cello and upright bass\, expect string arrangements that push and pull\, that move as they console. \nA classical violinist and musicologist by training\, Raine and the trio offer string-quartet-like arrangements of Raine’s original songs. They call this chamber-folk\, a hybrid of the classical tradition of string quartet chamber music\, with the singer songwriter folk that comes so naturally to Raine. \nMore information is available at: rainehamilton.com \nTickets: $20 Advance\, $25 At the Door (+applicable taxes & fees)

SUMMARY:CODE Quartet
DESCRIPTION:“A quartet that has developed its own interactive reality. There is much free-wheeling exuberance here\, and the music swings like mad. The two horns work beautifully together and solos are wonderful. The goal of freedom of expression for each member as shown in (Ornette) Coleman’s ground-breaking music is fully evident.” – Keith Black\, Winnipeg Free Press \nCODE Quartet is an outstanding jazz collective based out of Montreal made up of Christine Jensen on saxophones\, Adrian Vedady on acoustic bass\, Lex French on trumpet\, and Jim Doxas on drums. \nOriginally from Nanaimo\, Christine Jensen has become a mainstay in the Montreal and Canadian jazz scene known for her work with small ensembles and jazz orchestras as “one of Canada’s most compelling composers” (Globe and Mail). Vedady\, French and Doxas are all in demand session players and leaders of their own ensembles. They have numerous Juno Awards and Grammy nominations between them and have performed with a who’s who of jazz from Arturo Sandoval\, Diana Krall and Kurt Elling\, to Oliver Jones\, Dave Douglas and Laila Biali. \nThe group came together four years ago to build on the freedom of expression of a chording instrument-free quartet pioneered by Ornette Coleman’s seminal group of the 1950s\, with two horns interacting with acoustic bass and drums. Each voice within the collective is given equal weight\, blurring the boundaries between lead and supporting voices\, between frontline instruments and the rhythm section. The group have spent the past four years sculpting their original compositions as a team\, leading them to some exciting performance opportunities. They have performed residencies at jazz clubs in Montreal as well as The Wellington Jazz festival in New Zealand. The group’s principal focus is to present original compositions\, orchestrated exclusively for this particular ensemble\, weighing heavily on their improvisatory reactions to the written material. The result is their debut album Genealogy\, which was released this past April on Justin Time Records. \nYOUTH TICKETS: kids can get free tickets when accompanied by a paying adult\, and teens can get $5 tickets by emailing hwy19concerts@gmail.com \nTickets: $24 Admission (+applicable taxes & fees)

SUMMARY:Lonesome Ace Stringband
DESCRIPTION:Highway 19 Concerts and CR Live Streets welcome back one of Canada’s top old-time and bluegrass bands for an intimate performance at Rivercity Stage. \nLonesome Ace Stringband’s first visit to Campbell River was a sold out show in 2019 that was voted a finalist in the Mirror’s Readers’ Choice Awards for performance of the year. Mike Davies wrote of the show “There’s a fullness to the Lonesome Ace Stringband that belies the fact that there are only three of them on stage\, as they weave their individual efforts together into a tapestry of energy that flows from stark and sparse contemplative reflections on life to knee-slapping\, toe-tapping energy that makes you want to get out of your seat and dance…” \nChris Coole (banjo)\, John Showman (fiddle) and Max Malone (bass) are each journeyman musicians\, in-demand session players\, and veterans of some of Canada’s top roots music acts such as New Country Rehab\, David Francey\, The Foggy Hogtown Boys\, and Fiver. All three are also compelling lead singers\, each with his own character and range. This allows for the vocal texture to shift depending on how the song needs to feel – and what the song has to say. When those voices come together the power of the harmonies is unshakable. \nIn 2007\, the band took up residency in Toronto’s legendary Dakota Tavern routinely playing 10 sets of music every weekend. They spent 7 years as a house band before ever taking the show on the road or recording a note. Those years were a gestation period that allowed for a type of looseness and intuition to develop\, something that can only come from experienced musicians clocking hundreds of on-stage hours together. \nLonesome Ace Stringband has toured internationally\, been engaged at some of the largest festivals in North America and Europe (including Merlefest\, Rockygrass\, Wintergrass\, Winnipeg Folk Festival\, Vancouver Folk Festival\, Gooikorts\, John Hartford Memorial)\, and released four critically acclaimed studio albums. Their most recent release Lively Times was recorded live at the ANZA Club in Vancouver just a week after their memorable Campbell River debut in 2019. \nYOUTH TICKETS: kids can get free tickets when accompanied by a paying adult\, and teens can get $5 tickets by emailing hwy19concerts@gmail.com \nTickets: $24 Admission (+applicable taxes & fees)

SUMMARY:World Cup Soccer Watch Party
DESCRIPTION:With the Canadian men’s soccer team reaching the World Cup for the first time in a generation\, excitement and attention to soccer is at an all time high. Campbell River has a long and proud soccer history and a strong community of fans and players of all levels. With that in mind\, November 26 and 27 has been dubbed “Campbell River Soccer Celebration Weekend”. The event centres around a community watch party for the World Cup match between Canada and Croatia on the Sunday morning at 8am\, but the weekend includes youth soccer and the highest level of men’s soccer in town\, as well as a movie showing and foosball tournament\, all free for the community to take part in. \nThe events begin on Saturday\, November 26 the Robron turf field behind Merecroft Village with the final day of the Campbell River Youth Soccer Association (CRYSA) fall season. Over 400 local kids from four to fourteen years old are enrolled in house league this fall season. The World Cup match between Argentina and Mexico will be on screen upstairs in the field house\, and snacks will be available courtesy of parent volunteers\, with donations accepted to CRYSA. \nThen at 4:30\, still at Robron Field\, Campbell River Golden Wings host Saanich Fusion FC in Vancouver Island Soccer League men’s division 2 action. The Golden Wings have had a strong first half of their season but need all three points at home to Fusion if they hope to stay in the hunt for promotion to VISL’s first division. \nOn Sunday the scene shifts downtown for a community watch party of Canada’s World Cup match against Croatia. Initially planned for the Tidemark Theatre\, the event has been moved to the Coast Discovery Inn due to a BC Hydro planned outage that will effect the Tidemark that morning. Canada’s second World Cup match will be shown in the conference room with theatre seating for 200. Live half-time commentary will be provided by local soccer experts\, there will be door prize giveaways\, and food and snacks available from the Coast Discovery Inn restaurant and lounge. Admission is free with donations accepted to Campbell River Youth Soccer. Attendees are encouraged to wear red and to get loud cheering on Canada. \nFollowing the big game\, the Community Centre gym will be open for drop-in soccer and a foosball tournament\, and the World Cup match between Germany and Spain will be on screen at 11am\, and at 1pm the Library will be showing the 2008 family comedy film “Soccer Mom”. \nMeanwhile at the Robron turf\, Campbell River Youth Soccer’s U14 boys rep team hosts Mid-Isle from Ladysmith at 12:45 and the U15 boys host Surf SC from Nanaimo at 2:30. \nCampbell River Soccer Celebration Weekend is supported by the City of Campbell River and CR Live Streets.
