SUMMARY:Spring Interlude: A Community Music Showcase
DESCRIPTION:The Campbell River Community Band has prepared an upbeat and fun set of medleys highlighting rock\, funk\, and Motown classics from the mid 1960’s and 70’s. You’ll hear selections by The Jackson 5\, Tower of Power\, Electric Light Orchestra\, and Led Zeppelin. Don’t miss out hearing these unique medlies of monumental artists that have had a profound effect on the music industry since their conceptions! \nThe Campbell River Community Band was founded in January of 1996 by its then director\, Céline Ouellette. Over those twenty-seven years\, players from Campbell River\, the Comox Valley and Quadra Island have met on Wednesday nights to enjoy the wonderful world of concert band music. Members range in age from students to pensioners. Several couples are band members\, and on many occasions parents and their children have played together. Many of the musicians have been playing in the band since its first rehearsal: A true community ensemble! \nThe Campbell River Community band is currently under the direction of Kolya Kowalchuk\, who holds two bachelor degrees from McGill University\, one in composition and another in music education. During his studies\, he had the pleasure of conducting the McGill wind symphony\, McGill symphonic band\, Winnipeg Wind Ensemble\, and McGill Fight Band. More recently\, Kolya completed a master’s in music curriculum and instruction from Acadia University as a student of Dale Lonis and Ardith Haley. Kolya’s principal instruments are classical piano\, and percussion. He maintains his musical skills by teaching and leading bands atÉcole Phoenix Middle School and Carihi Secondary School. \nThe Strathcona Big Band will be bringing you a set of music that pays homage to our roots when we were known as the CAMPA Big Band in the 1970’s. The CAMPA Big Band was a collection of the finest musicians from all over Vancouver Island. They had a vast library of big band music that The Strathcona Band was fortunate enough to inherit. We will be bringing you a selection of tunes from this amazing library that feature many of the big band era’s greatest hits including Glenn Miller’s “In The Mood”\, Woody Herman’s “Woodchoppers Ball”\, and Frank Sinatra’s version of “Come Fly With Me”.  \nThe Strathcona Big Band is led by Erin Dwyer\, a born and raised “Campbell Riverite” who pursued a music education in Jazz Studies at both Vancouver Island University and Camosun College. The Strathcona Big band is made up of regular people who are immensely talented and enjoy making music together. We currently feature members who have been with us since our CAMPA Big Band days\, as well as students from Carihi\, and some new faces who have recently moved to the north island.  \nErin and Kolya are old friends from high school who have joined forces in Campbell River to make it a more musical place\, and connect people of all ages who enjoy creating and playing together. The package includes: \n\nTicket to the main event\nAll wine and brew tastings\nChampagne upon entry\nAssorted appy’s and tasty treats\nLive entertainment\nAccommodation (based on double occupancy)\nVIP Exclusive early access to event\nVIP Private Pre-event Dinner with wine pairing seminar\nThe Morning After Breakfast Buffet (Sunday\, May 28\, 2023 | 7:00 AM – 10:00 AM)\n\n**Available only through Painter’s Lodge Contact 250.286.1102│info@northcoasthotelresort.com \nTHE MAIN STAGE WITH LIVE MUSIC (included in all ticket purchases)\nwith Doc Fingers\, Rockin’ Johnny Ferreira\, Luke Blu Guthrie & More! \nSaturday\, May 27\, 2023 | 7:00 PM – 9:30 PM \nDoc Gallagher Blues Group \nIt was in the early ‘70’s Doc “Fingers”  while working with the Ronnie Hawkins band\, when the handle “Fingers” was acquired.   When it comes time for that therapeutic\, good time\, boogie woogie blues\, jazz and rock and roll\, there’s no one that can tickle the keys quite like the Doctor. \n“Doc” has played with musical greats such as Chuck Berry\, John Lee Hooker\, Rita Coolidge\, Kris Kristofferson\, Frank Zappa\, David Clayton-Thomas (Blood Sweat and Tears)\, Bo Diddley\, Jim Byrnes and many others. \nRockin’ Saxman”  Johnny Ferreira \nBorn in Portugal and growing up in Vancouver some of Ferreira’s primary influences were early rock and roll saxophonists King Curtis\, Edgar Winter\, Sam Taylor and later Bruce Springsteen and Supertramp.  Later\, he collaborated with guitarist and singer-songwriter Colin James\, both playing in clubs and joining the Colin James Band.   The band toured with Steve Winwood\, Stevie Ray Vaughan\, Robert Plat\, ZZ Top\, The Rolling Stones\, Bonnie Raitt and Keith Richards.   In 1990 the band released their second album going from gold to platinum.  And\, in the late 1990’s Ferreira form his own band “Johnny Ferreira and The Swing Machine” touring most of Europe. \nDr. Lindsay Mitchell \nBorn in North London\, England he emigrated with his family to Canada and settled in Vancouver  where he developed his guitar skills emulating instrumental surf music bands such as the Shadows\, the Ventures\, and British Invasion artists like the Beatles\, the Rolling Stones and the Yardbirds. \nIn 1974 he joined Bruce Fairbairn’s rhythm and blues band to help transform their sound from jazz fusion into blues rock.  1980 saw Prism win Juno Awards for Group of the Year while Fairbairn took Producer of the Year where Mitchell conceived the title song “Armageddon” in 1978 and earning multi-platinum status.  Mitchell and Prism performed on the first anniversary of Elvis Presley’s death. \nMore recently\, Mitchell was a regular performer on the Vancouver Blues scene\, notably with British blues legend Long John Baldry and with St. Louis-born actor/musician Jim Byrnes. \nLuke Blu Guthrie \nLuke Blu Guthrie is an Independent Rhythm and Blues artist who electrifies acoustic instruments with an Alternative Roots style.
