SUMMARY:Gentle Party
DESCRIPTION:Highway 19 Concerts returns to Rivercity Stage for a third season of intimate concerts by outstanding touring Canadian artists. \nDescribed as “lush and somewhat mischievous\, yet shimmering with melancholy” by BC Musician Magazine\, Gentle Party is a chamber pop trio that pioneers an expansive sound distinct to their West Coast roots. JUNO Award winning violinist Meredith Bates and Harpist Elisa Thorn weave a lush bed of strings with acoustic virtuosity and masterful electronic processing for the hauntingly evocative voice of lead singer\, Jessicka\, to rest on. The unique sounds and textures of each artist in the band combines to create a sound that is dream-like\, pandemonious\, playful\, and evocative. Their debut album\, Jouska make the Polaris Prize long list in 2017. This year\, they released album God Complex which The Wire calls a “startlingly confident and accomplished second album”\, as well as a 7” of remixes featuring Devours\, Tee Krispil of NADUH\, Fishdoll\, and Miguel Maravilla\, and a beautiful stop motion music video by Eva Nominelli which earned her a Western Canadian Music Award nomination for video director of the year. This is rich and sumptuous chamber pop with an acidic bite like you’ve never heard before. \nGeneral admission tickets are available for $20 to be affordable to anyone who wishes to attend\, or $30 help sustain this concert series. The choice is yours. Teen tickets are only $5 and tickets for kids are free when accompanied by a paying adult. \nTickets:$30/$20 Adult\, $5 Teen (ages 13-19)\, Child under 13 free with an accompanying adult (+applicable taxes and fees)

SUMMARY:Oktopus
DESCRIPTION:Oktopus is a major presence on the Canadian world music scene\, with over 250 performances to its credit at home and abroad. The group is primarily devoted to klezmer—the musical heritage of Eastern European Jews—distinguished by a novel approach that incorporates various components of classical\, Quebecois\, and jazz repertoires. The group’s eight virtuoso musicians offer festive\, high-energy performances\, at once melancholic and profound\, sprinkled with humour and spiced with narrative\, in which original compositions and finely crafted arrangements combine with improvisation. Its members’ complicity\, shared passion\, and hard work are what makes each of their performances so memorable—whether on stage\, in the street\, on a ship\, in a hot air balloon or in your living room\, Oktopus is simply… spectacular! Oktopus’ distinctive music is undeniably rooted in the klezmer tradition\, reflecting the rich history of a thousand-year-old community\, its persecutions and celebrations\, tears and laughter\, or both at the same time. Musicians of yesteryear incorporated in their repertoire the music they encountered on their journeys\, and just like them\, the members of Oktopus are inspired by the music they hear throughout their own travels. Thus\, the melodies of several classical composers\, such as Bartók\, Brahms\, Prokofiev or Enescu are rearranged by the octet\, particularly their works derived from folk themes. Quebec songwriters are also sources of inspiration\, with Leclerc and Vigneault being added to the group’s repertoire. \nPlease visit quadraconcerts.ca for additional details. \nTickets: $20 Advance\, $25 At the Door (+applicable taxes & fees)
