SUMMARY:Elise Boulanger
DESCRIPTION:Elise Boulanger is a sweet darkness wrapped in orchestral instrumentation. Hailing from Nanaimo (Snuneymuxw)\, Canada\, this chamber-folk-pop artist completely captivates audiences with her haunting avalanche of a voice. She creates cinematic dreamscapes influenced by nature\, her classical training and artists like Regina Spektor\, Patrick Watson\, Franz Schubert and Radiohead. She is described as sharing semblance with Kate Bush\, Lana Del Rey\, Kishi Bashi and CocoRosie. \nHer current single “The Mariner’s Remedy” (2019) is a cinematic sea chantey which Boulanger describes as “a poetic ghosting.” It will be followed by the summer release of single “Cigarettes et Rosé\,” an energetically percussive anthem of silly French happenings alluding to history and the importance of trusting people. This summer 2020 she would have been touring B.C. with her band to build on over 15+ years of performances\, like the 2018 JUNO celebrations and several notable Vancouver Island festivals. \nThere is no cost to watch! SUMMARY:Jesse Roper (Solo)
DESCRIPTION:Victoria BC’s Jesse Roper is magnetic. With an explosive live show\, the quality and charisma of his versatile blues sound rooted in soul\, rock and country is as approachable as his charm. The nostalgic may appreciate his throw back vibe akin to Stevie Ray Vaughan and vintage Texas blue. Jesse Roper’s music remains current while his youthful energy captivates audiences while his knock out live performance blows them away. Incapable of holding back\, Jesse always delivers the show of his life. \nThe singer-songwriter’s innate and impressive musical talent has served him well in recent years. It has given the flexibility to play with soul icon Booker T. Jones\, rock veteran Colin James\, and blues belter Beth Hart\, then turn around and headline nightclubs and festivals to younger audiences\, and look perfectly comfortable in each scenario. Adventuresome doesn’t properly describe Roper as an artist\, because when the guitar-wielding dynamo sets out to accomplish something\, there’s no telling where his mind will wander\, or when his energy will wane. \nTickets: $15 Streaming Admission (+applicable taxes & fees)

SUMMARY:The Art of Ragtime with Nico Rhodes
DESCRIPTION:Few Canadians know anything about Ragtime beyond Scott Joplin’s soundtrack to the movie ‘The Sting’.  Composer and pianist Nico Rhodes takes us on an intriguing musical journey through the evolution of Ragtime from classical to contemporary\,  featuring the rags of its best known proponents and little known stars. \nWho knew Debussy and Stravinsky composed pieces based in ragtime? In their time\, a formal classical music so rhythmically punctuated was highly unusual. The Italian word in classical music is ‘alla zoppa’ meaning ‘limping’ but the English translation ‘driving notes’ captures it better. \nRagtime was an ethno-syncretic intersection of African and European culture that shaped the musical landscape of popular music in North America for the following century. Taking its inspiration and unique character from the melodic and rhythmic vivacity of Afro-American folksongs and dances\, it was birthed in honkytonks and brothels\, the only places black musicians were allowed to play. Ragtime’s influence can be heard in contemporary rock\, blues\, jazz and classical genres\, despite an evolution hindered by prejudice against both the form and its performers. \nIn 1916\, Opera Magazine wrote: “Ragtime has carried the complexity of the rhythmic subdivision to a point never before reached in the history of music.”   One hundred and one years after Joplin’s Maple Leaf Rag was copywritten\, Nico brings the music he originated back into the limelight. \nAt 29\, Nico Rhodes is in constant demand as arranger and musical director for long run stage shows\, when not touring with his own jazz trio or his mother\, internationally renowned chanteuse Joelle Rabu. Nico was honoured with the 2019 City of Nanaimo Emerging Cultural Leader Award. \nTickets: $10 Streaming Admission (+applicable taxes & fees)

SUMMARY:Satellite and the Harpoonist
DESCRIPTION:As the great poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow once stated\, “The best thing one can do when it’s raining is to let it rain.” And so\, in January 2020\, as the city’s longest spell of precipitation in over five decades threatened to wash Vancouver into the Pacific\, four musicians from disparate sonic territories did just that. Not that they had a say in the matter\, they let it rain while gathering at Afterlife Studios to conduct an experiment as radical and historic as the weather outside. \nShawn Hall of the acclaimed maverick blues duo The Harpoonist and The Axe Murderer was the progenitor\, his notion being to assemble three talented friends with whom he had previously worked\, yet that had never met each other. Then\, during an intense three-day exploration of alchemic creative collaboration within a self-imposed pressure cooker environment\, they would record a 6-song EP – all under the gaze of a film crew. So\, as the rain smashed down on the City of Glass\, Satellite and The Harpoonist was birthed\, with every labour pain and its exhausting entry into the world captured on celluloid. \nJoining singer/harmonicist Hall in this extraordinary project – his “people that want to play in the sandbox” – are Geoff Hillhorst (Hammond organ/piano/synthesizers) of award-winning alt-country-folk dreamers\, The Deep Dark Woods; Theo Vincent (percussion/congas/vocals) from Vancouver’s funk-soul powerhouse The Boom Booms\, and on drums and Pencilina\, Brooklyn’s Bradford Reed\, of out-there art-rockers\, King Missile III. The Pencilina\, an incredible double-necked zither-like contraption\, is Reed’s own one-off invention\, making Satellite and The Harpoonist the world’s only band to feature it. \nTickets: $15 Streaming Admission (+applicable taxes & fees)
