African Chamber Music Ensemble
This boundary-pushing project reimagines African musical traditions through the intimate lens of the Western string quartet. Featuring arrangements by composer and ethnomusicologist Curtis Andrews, the ensemble weaves together the expressive depth of mbira music from Zimbabwe’s Shona people and the layered rhythms of Ghana’s Ewe culture into a chamber setting that is both respectful and revelatory.
At its core are master musicians Kurai Mubaiwa and Kwashie Kuwor, whose performances ground the repertoire in cultural authenticity and deep knowledge. They are joined by an adventurous string quartet whose dynamic interplay challenges and expands the Western classical tradition. Together, they offer a compelling new space for cross-cultural dialogue, rich in history, imagination, and soul.
