Belle Plaine

Enigmatic singer-songwriter Belle Plaine hails from the heart of the Canadian Prairies. She brings creativity and versatility to every musical moment: a charming folk singer, honkytonk front woman and clear-eyed storyteller. Her eclecticism has seen her perform internationally, with symphonies, at music festivals and in intimate house concerts. Her 2018 album Malice, Mercy, Grief + Wrath was a 2020 JUNO nominee and her duet with Colter Wall on his song “Caroline” achieved gold certification by the RIAA.

Her brand new album The Weather will be released on September 18. Produced by Paul Rigby (Neko Case, Garth Hudson), The Weather takes Belle Plaine’s synthesis of folk, early country and roots music in a new direction to exist on the edges of indie rock and country. Its deeply feminine songwriting perspective hits hard when delivered through the vehicle of her definitive tone and versatility as a singer. The infinite horizon, farming work ethic and sincerity of her upbringing transports listeners to this modest, yet vast, landscape.

Her writing has been favourably reviewed by Rolling Stone, Exclaim! and No Depression, and her voice has been called “effortless, versatile… both girlish and husky in the same song”, “sultry, seductive, fragile, and dusky while still capable of room-filling bombast when the moment calls for it”, “the voice of an angel”, “to borrow an old cliche: she could sing the phone book…”

Belle Plaine has built a loyal following that continues to flourish and has brought her to stages near and far including Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion in Tennessee/Virginia, Kickin’ It On The Creek in Kentucky, Festival of Small Halls in PEI, Wide Cut Weekend in Alberta, Regina Folk Festival, JUNOfest, Folk Alliance International and AmericanaFest, and regular and enthusiastic airplay on stations like Alberta’s CKUA and Seattle’s KEXP.

The Highway 19 Concert Series is supported by the Province of BC through BC Arts Council and BC Live, and the Government of Canada’s Department of Canadian Heritage.

General admission tickets are $30 with a limited number available for $20 to be accessible for those with limited income. Youth tickets are only $5.
