In 1949, Helene Hanff, a script reader/writer, contacts an antiquarian bookstore in London where chief buyer and manager Frank Doel fulfills her requests for hard to find classics and British literature titles that she has been unable to find in New York City. Through 20 years of correspondence about food shortages in Britain, how to make Yorkshire pudding, the Brooklyn Dodgers and the coronation of Elizabeth II, Helene, the staff of Marks & Co and the Doel family develop a lasting friendship. Helene dreams of the day she can browse ‘her’ bookstore in person. And she does.
