Couples Therapist Explores Intimate Relationships Through Abstract Art

On Tuesday, March 5 at 5:30pm, the Tidemark Art Gallery will host an opening reception for ‘You See Me Like This’, a collection of large abstract paintings by Justice Schanfarber.

Schanfarber is a couples therapist and artist who lives and works in Campbell River. He makes abstract paintings as metaphors to reflect what he encounters in his counselling work with couples.

“For ten years I’ve worked as a couples therapist, and perhaps I paint as only a couples therapist would. It’s inescapable; my paintings reflect the tensions, the boldness, the starkness and the richness of the intimate relationships that are laid bare before me”, says Schanfarber.

“What you see in these paintings is of the psyche: mine, yours, theirs; something individual and something collective, something enduring and something that might yet change under your gaze…. Each of these paintings tells a relationship story, and some of them are bound to be yours.”

A self-taught artist, Schanfarber has also worked in sound mediums – performing and recording internationally. He has written two relationship books and three chapbooks of poetry.

‘You See Me Like This’ will exhibit in the Tidemark Art Gallery from March 1 – April 17 and can be viewed Tuesday through Friday from 12-4pm. An opening reception for the exhibit will be held at the Tidemark on March 5th from 5:30pm-7pm.  Admission is free and all are welcome.
